This team kills me. I'm patient and believe in drafting and all that, want nothing hasty, but I need some signs of good faith from Hextall and Hakstol to inspire me more than just the draft. Not talking some dumb signing or shortsighted trade. This season has been horrendous and one of the toughest to watch seasons in a while. Everyone has regressed; coaching, every single coach on this team, seems highly questionable with their systems and decision making; our core is getting older or is flawed; NHL talent evaluation has fallen short time and time again. Everything but the draft does bother me.
I just don't see a team that's Cup competitive for several years yet. They'll keep improving. The defense will look beautiful starting next year. But I just need some real signs this offseason that they self-identify some of these things beyond the prospects. I'm OK with a bad season; I get growing pains. But this is a bad season in which they actually seem to think they're competitive and want to win. Are we rebuilding still or competing? Which is it? Decide accordingly. My fear is little to nothing changes, and I'm talking about a lot more than personnel. - Mononoke
Agree 100%
Here's what I'd like to see:
1. All of the assistants replaced
2. At least 2 core veteran forwards traded for younger players and picks
3. At least 2 of Morin, Hagg, Sanheim and Myers on the team from day 1 of the season
4. Lindblom and Leier given every shot to make the team |

There is something a tad askew about this core group of players. Consistently inconsistent would be putting it nicely.

A few thoughts on Giroux and Voracek.
-For years, all I wanted was to see what G and Jake could do apart. Now I have and frankly, they're much better together. The passing play that led to the first goal was a clear indication that we should put them back together. The stretch run started last week. Vintage Claude Giroux to start the play.
-Jake Voracek. That guy has one weakness in his game. His lack of shot. His lack of goal production. I argued for years that he wasn't elite. Maybe he is, maybe isn't but the real problem is, with all that ability and creativity. He should have at least two or three 30 goal seasons to go with those assists in his career.
-Claude Giroux, I can't figure out why the drop off. There was once a time he was a two point guarantee. Clearly no longer flashy and that's fine but he still plays a pretty good game. Just little results. He could still be a number one center on a team lacking one. |

I think the disappointment of the season had clouded your judgement here. The direction that this team has taken under Hextall has already changed a great deal. Somehow there is this idea that the Flyers brass has this false idea of how they see themselves. I think that's an illusion of the fans, rather than an issue of how the team is operating. Flyers are not a team who is not going to compete within the parameters of the long term vision. They're not a tank organization. They don't need to decide accordingly, because you can do both. You can build for the future while trying to remain competitive. A lot has gone wrong this season but it's not because of their philosophy.

They each score more apart than with each other. Couturier-Voracek scores a whopping 1 more goal per 60 minutes together than with Giroux. That's the pair that should be reunited IMO. Schenn is looking like normal Schenn again. Why not just go 10-14-93? That's what I would try. |

Over the past stretch of games Giroux has looked much better..6 points in 6 games and skating looks better.
I agree that Jake and G together is a better dynamic then apart.

I don't care how they do this year. I'm ALL about 3-5 years from now because that's when it matters. I'm not disappointed they aren't making the playoffs. I didn't expect anything if they did. Nothing has clouded my judgment because I haven't said anything differently this season than over the summer.
You can try to shortchange my opinions by saying I'm not "thinking clearly." Well, I am. Everything I've said is well digested. |

I disagree, the case you made is not sound. Hextall has the same vision of building the team for 3-5 years from now, and that's what his obvious focus is, yet you claim they have to decide which direction they want to head in and decide. Hextall made that decision the moment he was hired as GM, and has not veered from how he has stated he is going to operate as the Flyers GM.

3-5 years from now is an eternity. You have no clue who the goaltender will be, no idea who the coach will be, and outside of Provorov there isn't a single player who is on the roster or in the system right now who you can say are sure to be on the team then. You think Hextall is likely to be the GM in 3-5 years? With this many uncertainties, there isn't any way to forecast what this team will be that far down the road.
It can't be any worse than this current load of poop. |
