Correct .... he wasn't a 4th liner.... waivers was an issue but he could have been kept as the extra forward and draw in as insurance or if someone was slumping .... they just tossed him.... shame ... waste of a pick
- Nuck4U

to be honest, at the time, i didn't mind throwing him in the trade. that 1st round pick is what made the deal "over payment," in my mind.

further honesty, i thought that ballard was exactly the type of player the team needed at the time.

a durable and tough dman that wouldn't be heavily relied on but could provide an all around game to complement the pretty strong d corps (at the time.) yeah, he was all of those things except the opposite.

that worked out well.

Should we claim McIlrath? 24 years old, 6-4, 212 lb, a nasty, right hand shot D-man,
imagining McIlrath(6-4), Pedan(6-4), Tryamkin(6-7), and Gudbranson(6-5) in line up?
holy.. who want to play against Cancuks

Turned out brutal but it was a good idea at the time. That 1st round pick was very late, not much better than the 2nd we just gave up in the Gudbdy deal.

The Ballard trade ended up being really bad but at the time I seem to recall most people though the Canucks had done really well to get him. Grabner was part of the cost to acquire a top 4 D.

Overpaying was the thought at the time and it was even more evident after signing UFA Hammer but hey what do the Canucks know about asset management

at the time, i thought the proverbial 3rd rounder would/should have been enough to consummate the deal. a first seemed a bit much. not deal breaking but it did make me wince at the time. although with mg's drafting, it wasn't that much of a missed opportunity i suppose.

Back in 2005 I believe, a group of us were discussing the sedins and we all came to the conclusion that management should make them 2nd line players and get a killer 1st line. If they wanted big money and we couldn't afford them then trade them.

If they see him as better insurance then Biega why not... but when Tanev comes back then it's a keep him or Stecher argument .... if all D are healthy.... plus we have Tree to consider

and kesler would never turn out to be anything more than a 3rd line checking centre.

That is not what I said.

However, the deals themselves were similar.
