Sure, but calling a guy up for 5 games over 2 seasons, that's all you can really hope for.

Much like Gaunce, or Baertschi or basically any young player it takes time and opportunity before they do anything special.

Yeah, all we can expect really.

Where is Vantel Lemming anyways? Did Master Lemming and Subban Shack squash their beefs over some lunch time pints?

yes, the forecast out here calls for bleak grey skies with a chance of rioting.

I always thought that was a strange idea that AV didn't give young players a chance. He brought lots of young Canucks into the fold and look at his roster right now, full of youth.
- belcherbd

I think it was more a case of AV occasionally giving a fair chance to a young kid if he was a naturally safe player(Tanev). Otherwise, forget it... look at Gabner... after proving he can score in the AHL, he's called up, scores 4 goals in a game in the NHL and gets taken out of the lineup and sent back down. The following year is his rookie season and he scores something like 35 goals for the Islanders... during this time we needed scoring and AV absolutely did not want to play Grabner.... Raymon Raymond Raymond... always Raymond instead of Grabner...

Grabner turned into a defensively sound player in the end for what it's worth.

Then there was the poisoning with the relationship with Hodgson. What kind of coach publicly accuses a player of more or less faking injury. If a coach has doubts, you don't tell the media. Hodgson didn't turn out as projected but he was a pretty big deal at the time... again, another bad relationship with our first rounders who were needed for their scoring.

Nonis and Gillis were not very good at drafting in the first round but think how frustrating it must be when your coach keeps chasing your 1st rounders out of town.

So based on practice lines .... the bomb of last game is being blamed on fatigue.

But you got to like Tony G's line on 1040 interview on Skille with Bo and Baer
..." what a way to neuter a line".

Thoughts on lines...? Or it's hopeless no choice ... team is doomed....?

You wouldnt send Biega down for a 24 year old with size and strength who could have some untapped potential?
- phyllee

The GM has some kind of master plan where Biega gets the occasional game so he meets the minimum to leave him exposed during the expansion draft. That takes a spot from better players in the system. Sounds pretty dumb really... how hard would it be to find an expendable D with at least 3/4 of a season under his belt?

Or just expose Sbisa....

Grabner was traded away as a throw in and picked up on waivers by the Isle from the Panthers.... he then showed he could stick .... was a solid player for years on a talent poor team. Av didn't see a roster spot for him but we shouldn't have sent him packing ... bad depth move ... a lot of people had hopes for him with his speed but he wasn't an adaptable player like what we had at the time. Coaches are obsessed with D play. It's sad but true.

Raymond was producing at the time but what AV loved more was he could play PK and didn't see Grabner there at the time. But if they didn't trade him away for nothing he may have had another chance... that was Gilles move ....

Ya, I think it's fair about Grabner but don't forget he was sent packing, I think on waivers from Florida too. I had big hopes for that kid too.

Edler, Kesler, Burrows, Bieksa, Hansen, Rypien, Glass and probably more all came up when he was in charge. Schroeder was given a bunch of opportunities or was that when Torts was here?

I think he demanded his players could play both ends of the ice.

the issue was (and this is funny vis-a-vis virtanen) that grabner wasn't seen as a 4th line (or even bottom 6) player. he was viewed as top 6 or bust. therefore, the issue was going to be whether grabner would have a roster spot in the upcoming season. management didn't see him beating out raymond (who just came off a 25 goal season) and saw that he would need waivers to get sent down.

they could have kept him but it was the same discussion: is it better for a top 6 guy to play bottom 6 minutes in and out of the lineup or get sent down and play a lot.

the difference is that management at the time wanted to send him down but knew he would be taken off waivers (as florida found out.)

sigh.

Correct .... he wasn't a 4th liner.... waivers was an issue but he could have been kept as the extra forward and draw in as insurance or if someone was slumping .... they just tossed him.... shame ... waste of a pick

The Ballard trade ended up being really bad but at the time I seem to recall most people though the Canucks had done really well to get him. Grabner was part of the cost to acquire a top 4 D.
