He would have been worth a try. AV actually had pretty big praise for him but he can't be buried as the Rangers 8th dman...they said he needs to play. - LordHumungous
We need scoring not defense.

I am not going to pretend like I fully understand the rules behind the expansion draft but ideally picking up McIlrath and waiving Biega would be perfect. Biega is a leader down in Utica. I would say he would be great for developing Stecher but it looks like Stecher might stay up for a while and is protected from being eligible for expansion draft? (correct me if I am wrong here). It sounds to me like Biega and Sbisa are the two eligible D-men from Vancouver and I have not read any posts or blogs about who is available from the forwards. |

Canucks need to expose "One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons."
Biega played 51 games last year, Sbisa played 41. One of those two will hit the 70 games this year; Sbisa will likely play 40 games, so that will meet the requirement.
Stecher is not eligible for the draft, not enough pro experience.
Up front, I think depending on the protected list, the likely available will be Granlund, Gaunce, Dorsett. I think they protect Sedins, Louie, Horvat, Hansen, Sven, Sutter but at this point you could possibly swap Granlund with Sven. If I am Vegas, I take one of Granlund/Sven... maybe Gaunce. Definitely not a defenseman |

McIlrath would be a great pickup for team toughness!.....
Aside from the fact that he can't skate, consistently is beat to pucks, and burned when players drive wide on him.
Other than that, what a great fit! |

Protect Sven, unless Granlund has a huge year. It will come down to who performs better between Granlund and Gaunce that is taken. |

I would say protect Sven too, but Granlund has really looked good with Hansen and Sutter. If they keep this chemistry going, it would be tough to break up the line.
Depending on the other selections, I would think it be challenging to pass up on one of Sven or Granlund. Gaunce is the younger than those two, so maybe Vegas would see more value there, but its a tough call. Canucks will be offering up scraps though |

If both Sven and Granlund have good years trade Hansen at TDL and protect both of them. As good as Hansen is if hes taking a spot of a young guy that deserves to stay i trade Hansen for assets anyday |

We aren't getting a first for Hansen. Smart clubs don't trade first round picks for skilled 3rd liners. |

i disagree a contending team would , he still has term on friendly contract and can play anywhere in your top 9 |

Just listened to Pratt comparing Virtanen's attitude and development to Kassian. Wants to trade Virtanen for Evander Kane. |

Not sure he's the answer, but it's worth a shot. An unlikely one as JB already passed on him once. But the atmosphere was different as we were winning. |
