And if you look at the blues roster he will be a 3rd or 4th line rw.... plus Hitchcock as yaks new coach will be even more demanding of him. If he's lucky some of tarasenkos influence will rub off on him. - murTor
I think they try him on second to see if his offence starts rolling |

David staples just tweeted:
The horror of the Corsi crowd at Kris Russell signing is equal to their joy at Mark Fayne signing.
So there's that to hold onto.
Makes a good point. People like Matt and tanner that use nothing but Corsi to evaluate a player drive me crazy. - kessellover69
exactly
fayne is a terrible hockey player.
sometimes he decides to engage in front of the net which is nice at least. but most of the time he doesnt even do that. under those circumstances, he literally doesnt have one redeeming quality to speak of
russel is brutal defensively, small and shouldnt be asked for anything more than 16-18 mins.
but at least he has some modicum of ability to pass the puck and start a rush...and its only 1 year.

I'm sorry.....I just don't get anyone's sadness that Niall is gone.....I think this is all. on Katz......management didn't want to draft him....but for some reason Katz over-road their decision.....and the kid turned out o be everything management feared would happen. Not a team player.....and a lot of B.S. What he needed was some duty down in the AHL....but they were scared to send him there because they thought he'd bolt for Moscow.....another reason to not miss him. |

Yakupov: this is first time I've played on really, really good team. I think it's awesome, I don't know what winning is. - RAGSareDANGERus

Exactly. Russel can atleast produce some offence as well.
Last five years:
Fayne: 13G 37A 50 points
Russel: 22G 79A 101 points

we just freed up 2.5 mil for a guy that was outplayed this preseason by castoff versteeg, bandaid pitlick, ncaa signing cagiulla.
seriously, sucks that yaks couldnt get it done here, its an ugly return for a former first overall. but that ship has sailed. its what hes worth now and he wasnt doing anything positive for the oilers.
buh bye |

Yup and used the money to sign Russell. I'm not a huge Russell fan but I think he's good enough to make our top six better. We have six actual NHL defenseman for the first time in a while. Worst case scenario we trade Russell at the trade deadline. He got a Conditional 1st/2nd + prospect+ depth dman at the deadline last year. Worth a shot anyways. |

Kris Russel: 21st in loose puck recoveries/game last sesaon (27.9). 20 ahead of him, a bunch of all-stars. Not a top D, not worst either.
This will be a welcome change. We've lost way to many pick battles the last few years. It's crazy how advanced stats people are so focused on corsi but not on stats like these. |

very bad trade, I think there is a very good player inside of Yakupov somewhere. There really was not much attention on him this year and he could have just silently worked his way up the lineup. He seemed to be improving enough to at least give him a try.
In the end, I'm sure there was a discussion with the coaching staff and it looks like that discussions was something like "so, what about Yakupov?" "trade him, I don't want him". I have faith in this coaching staff. The GM? not so sure, but in the end the coaching stafff probably gave the green light to let him go. He's not an important player and will not be missed, but I believe they could have gotten more value for him.
Sleeper hockey pool last pick...Nail Yakupov. |

What value were we supposed to get? a 3-4 D man? a 1st rounder? how many more seasons should we have given the guy to pan out? 2-3 more? its not like he was improving or anything

I love how stupied 90% of all fan bases are. I mean really?? The same guys who are saying Yak is a bust, are female doging about the return, and are now saying his going to go score 30 goals for the blues... I got news for you, he wont last long for the blues. Hitch is going to eat him up after one week. I bet he wont even dress for the game on the 20th.
Mgmt is finally trying to build a team top to bottom and surround Mcdavid with team, unlike what past gms did for Hall. Reinhart trade is a bad one, but again, its on MacT, you can go back and listen to interviews. Its a deal that was in place before Pete took over and when it came up, he took it. He didnt know the depth of the time yet. Thats the only bad trade so far, and yet in still understand it. Hall trade is a wash, if Larsson plays top mins for the team all year long, and pushes the puck north, then that is better for the team then having Hall. Some people need to understand that or go cheer for the blackhawks or every else is on top at the time. |

Its crazy how bad Oilers management was. After getting hot shot forwards Hall and Hopkins they could have gotten one of 5 future Allstar Dman...Lindholm, Murray, Dumba, Trouba, Pouliot!!
Yak only played two yrs in junior. So how do scouts predict potential and ceiling? Yes he had a monster yr in juniors, but do they base it off one one yr alone? Im curious why Yak was a clear #1 when clearly he wasn't?
Or was this a case of Edmonton not embracing a Russian? I heard stories how he got poop on for Jersey number or something?
Or was this a case of bad coaching and guiding?
I find this very fascinating and I hope you people can give me insightful answers. |

yeah, I agree with you. I'm just disappointed that the value of that first overall pick was wasted I guess I'm trying to say. Also, I'm a salesman so I have to believe that there was a better deal out there...but like the Hall trade, I"m sure there were a lot of conversations and attempts to unload him. At least there is activity on this team now.
So, did the Russell signing actually happen? I don't know much about this guy, is that a good thing? He's got to be an upgrade on Fayne and Gryba. Gryba was horrible last game, like fkn Treebeard our there he's so slow. |

Shut the peep up. At the time everyone said the Oilers were lucky to draft Nail. He was goign to be Bure. The internet is great for looking up the past. Spend some time and check your facts. Hindsight is always 20/20. But shut up if your going to talk out of your ass. |
