Of course they should. It's ridiculous to shut the season down for a month right in the middle. And they're getting screwed financially in the tv deal.

I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that some time after the World Cup of Hockey, the NHL opts out of the Olympics.

Panel of NHL governors discuss pros and cons of NHLers going to 2018 Olympics

But, on the other hand, from a business perspective — and this is probably more for the United States than it is in Canada — shutting down at a time when football season is over and baseball has yet to start, you’re really in a sweet spot from the standpoint of having an audience all to yourself, maybe sharing it if there’s NBA and college basketball going on in some markets.

Like I mentioned in this thread...Olympics are better...they should go, its fun and fans are much more interested in watching than made up tournys

also like I mentioned Owners will use it as leverage to get something...all posturing
they have started it already asking to extend the CBA to let players go

has your stance changed dopps?

http://www.hockeybuzz.com...p?thread_id=133519&page=2

I've been telling you for almost a year the NHL owners don't want to pause their season for practically 3 weeks, during the playoff drive, and risk their Star players being injured............ and this is why the WCH has been brought back.

Olympics will not be happening with NHL players, the writing is on the wall.

No it has not.
I'm not going to argue that the Olympic hockey Tourney is better with the best players in the world participating, that's obvious, but I would follow it regardless of who is playing.

The majority of Owners don't want to go, as they don't receive anything positive in return from shutting down their season at a time when they practically have the entire North American sports spotlight all to themselves, during the "stretch drive" to the playoffs ......... and then there's the risk of losing players (injury) for the playoffs.

Then there is also the season long compressed schedule that negatively affects the quality of their product on the ice that is also distasteful.

All the studies have shown that Olympic TV rating does NOT translate into higher TV rating for the NHL.

NHL is going to bypass 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang

http://news.nationalpost....8-olympics-in-pyeongchang

Behind closed doors, the owners will claim they’re tired of the revenue losses associated with shutting down the league for almost three weeks. And should you respond by claiming they are shortsighted, the probable answer would be: “Well, it’s not your money.”

Next thing they need to take care of, is this stupid compressed Schedule, that gives team more B2B games, more 3in4 games, more games on day after returning from longer road trips, no time for practices and many other consequences.

If they want the "by-week" do it all at the All-star break for all teams at the same time Wednesday to a Wednesday ........ or even get rid of the stupid mean nothing All Star game ......... improve the product for the fans that foot the majority of the bills.

The NHL team owners, are in business to make money, and they get nothing, absoulutley nothing, in return from shutting down their season for three weeks, right in the middle of the playoff stretch run...... when they have a greater share of the US sports fan market almost to themselves ( no NHL of MLB to compete with ).

They risk losings key players to injury at the most critical time of the season, that could affect their team for making the playoffs, or going deeper into the playoffs.

If the players wanted to go, they would have worked it into their CBA with the league, but failed to.

I think that is very short signed not true at all.

when you have NHL owners like Eugene Melnyk spouting off it hurts the game and players like Karlsson want to go. Lets hope if they dont end up going and EM continues to be a (frank)ing fool EK goes the UFA way.

Name one thing that NHL owners have benefited from having shutdown their league, and sending their star players to the Olympics.

You do realize that you're trying to suck and blow at the same time?

You claim that EG is only in it for the money, and is cheap ............... so if he would see some sort of monetary return from the Olympics, then why is he against it??

The NHL has made it clear, they resurrected the WCOH, and over time, that will be the Best on Best tournament of choice........ and the Olympics can do whatever they want.

Football is the biggest team sport, in popularity in the World, by a long shot, and they don't send their best players to the Olympics, and everyone is okay with that, because every four years they hold their Best on Best tournament, and it generates billions of dollars.......... and this is the model the NHL want to copy.

I am a Fan and want to watch NHL players in the Olympics, I it gives NHl players exposure into other markets. why are they playing pre-season games in china and wherever. I also dont care about billionaire owners who want immediate benefits for doing it.

The WCOH was lame. I dont remember anything about it. I do remember the Olympics they were great

The NHL owners want to expose the NHL to other markets, to get television revenue from other markets ............. having NHLers in the Olympics have NOT helped in that.

NHL owners want people in Europe and other places to buy NHL gear, and the Olympics have not helped in that.

It does not matter if you don't care what NHL owners want, they care what they want, and they don't want to go to the Olympics, as it does nothing for them, in any way, and shutting down their season for three weeks hurts them......... so they've brought back the WCOH, and eventually you'll come to accept it as the Best on Best event to see.

Does anyone watch the Olympic football tournament? Who won the gold medal at the last Olympics, in football?

But we all know who won the World Cup, don't we.

Football is by far the most popular sport in the World, and they don't sent their best players, from professional leagues to the Olympics, and the World Cup is the standard for best on best for any sport, hands down.

IF the NHL stays out of the Olympics, the NHL could cultivate the WCOH into the accepted best on best tournament for hockey, in a decade or two.

But there is some speculation that the NHL could be using this as a bargaining tactic with the NHLPA, and maybe they return to the Olympics in the future ......... which I don't think they should.
