good pairing with bogosian
you think we could have top 2D for playing with ristolainen? (frank)ing good 4D
I hope TM trades most of pick, maybe he trade 8 for a good D, and with others trades (4 3round) we an draft jack bean (good prospect D)

Is he a top pair defense men? That is the million dollar question, Michael. I know a lot of you don't like advanced stats on this board, and I'm not one who believes it tells the entire truth of the player, but I do believe it plays a big role.

I'd say that's a pretty good looking chart right there. So I'm going to guess and say that Jake McCabe is on his way to progressing as a top pair defenseman. And not just because the table looks good, but I watched 90% of the games and saw a player who had the skills, work ethic, and smarts to work his way up to the top pair.

EDIT: So my links won't work and I don't know how to put a picture on this board while using my phone. If you want to see the chart just go to the first chart, and type in McCabe's name on either player A or B boxes.

I remember watching that draft and it being pick 41 or so...we had 44...I had watched Jake in the U17 or U18 tourney, forget which, and I was praying they would take him. When they did I thought he'd be the future captain and steal of the draft. While he may not have been the Captain's Captain I had envisioned...he still may be the "steal" of that draft. He really is coming around...deserves top pairing chance next year.

Edit: MP is quite right...4 goals 10 helpers is his absolute floor. Double that next year...

he had reinhart's back in 2015 when I interviewed him:

"He's under a microscope," said McCabe of Reinhart during a recent phone interview. "Being the #2-overall pick there were high expectations on him and people forget that he's only 18 yrs. old. People need to realize that. It's a process. Not many guys are ready to play in the NHL at 18. We saw how he dominated at the [just completed] World Juniors."

I think his defense will continue to improve while he rounds out his game...how much offensive upside does he have?...we'll find out in the next couple of years

i'll take your word for it, griz...and I will say this, as much as i'd want to see risto paired with OEL or a d-man of his quality, if Risto pans out the way he should, he and the sabres won't need another elite defenseman on the top pair

good point on the captain part, rhino...don't need to wear a letter to be a leader and he exudes leadership qualities

Very true. I won't be disappointed if McCabe ends up being a solid top 4 guy. I think he plays good enough defense, and would allow Risto to take some more chances offensively.

Could McCabe be our version of Seabrook?
- washedup20

Keyword there is version. McCabe could be our strong, second fiddle...like Seabrook is to Keith. However, Seabrook is much more physically imposing than McCabe most of the time. I will probably be hung out to dry for it, but he reminds me of Shattenkirk in a lot of ways.

Most probable outcome McCabe is a great 3-4 or a weaker #2...either way though he was a great find in the 2nd round.

A rationally thought out take on Stamkos. Doesn't look like whoever wrote it is affiliated/aligned with any team either, just looks like a neutral take. And someone actually said something nice about the Sabres that's not a fanboy.

Guhle and Bailey could be another two great finds in the 2nd round and thats just in the past 4 years. Still holding out hope for Karabacek and Cornel. Baptiste and Estephan also have promise drafted in the 3rd and 6th rounds respectively.

"The Sabres have the potential to become one of the NHL’s best in the not too distant future and could afford to give Stamkos the money he wants and deserves."

That is tough to argue.

Patrick Hornquist was the last pick of the 2005 draft. He has turned out to be a pretty darned good player. Hopefully some of the non 1st round guys you mentioned turn out to be significant contributors to the Sabres down the road.

This is a well balanced, objective article. I think the author hit the nail on the head, does Stamkos go for maximum cash with the possibility of winning in a few years or does he go for lesser cash with the chance to win now.

22 picks in the next two drafts as well. Rebuild is on the rise but we still have many assets still left. This might be the most important draft in this franchises history this year and it's fitting that it's in Buffalo.

Gems are on the rise already with that many picks to restock with. Can't agree more.

Don't know who they target at 8 but they can't miss on that pick. The elite teams are always able to succeed with elite young talent making less then their worth.

I hope the Sabres get the second Dman off the board. Though, if two go ahead of us, then we get a high quality forward.

Sure and with Samson and Jack already in that scenario now is the time to strike it big. IMO our pick is going to be made for us.

Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi, Tkachuk are all gone by us no matter what. Dubois, Nylander, Juolevi and Chychrun are those next four players to go. IMO there is another drop off to get to the guys like Keller, McLeod, Jost or Bean (I love Jost). So really our choice is made for us. Unless Sergachev can beat out one of these players (he is the only close one) our pick is made for us by Arizona at 7, really.
