Either Bouma is the power forward that got paid in his last contract or he's a fourth liner who should be making $700k. If he's the latter, they need to move him while they can to get that cap space back. |

While we are talking hypotheticals:
If Calgary is not drafting top 4.
Snow says he wants a defenseman back in return for Harmonic but if he can't get what he wants I could see Edmonton trading one of their forwards (Ebs) to get Ham.
But what about Flames somehow targeting Dal Colle? Swapping firsts with NY for Dal Colle?
Calgary could throw Wideman (salary retained I am guessing) and another piece like Shink or Klimchuck. NY could draft one of the young Dman like Chych??? that could fill Harmonic's role in a couple years but have Wideman playing in their 4-5 role for at least next year.
In this scenario NY finally gets a stud to play with JT, gets a lesser LW prospect for Dal Colle and somehow replaces Harmonic (though not ideally), Edmonton finally gets a top pairing Dman.
Flames get a stud winger who could play with Bennett. Someone (I think Dal) was also saying that there was a power forward who was projected to go somewhere around 20th in the draft, Flames might have to make a trade to draft up but make sure draft him.
Flames sign Okposo in the offseason.
Would leave Calgary's top 2 lines as
JG-SM-Okposo
Dal Colle-SB-Ferland (maybe Poirier)
I wrote this while the old lady is making pancakes, I love lazy Sunday mornings. And remember, its just hypotheticals.

I wish I was having a lazy Sunday! 3 am came way to early this morning with the stupid time change.
One thing that seems to be the common theme around here is that we all like Okposo. I have herd several interviews with BT and he consistently talks about our organizational need of getting another top 6 RW and a goalie. I really think that he'll take a stab at signing him.
What do we all think Okposo signs for and do we have the coin to make it happen? |

Bouma is a perfect 3-4th line player he is coming off a big injury. He will have a better season next year.. I hate to bring up last year, but he played a huge roll and was a catalyst of a lot of comebacks and had some good enargy shifts to get the team back into the game. We actually lucked out when ferland stepped up and did fantastic!! Yes we need the Jonnys to be who they are but the ferland and bouma type players are very important , when it comes to playoff hockey |

3 am sounds really early unless its for a damn good reason.
I would think Okposo will go for around 5.5-5 years. He is 27. What kinda worries me is that the Isles fan's don't seem to be too sad to see him go.
On a side not I can't believe Tavares is only getting paid 5.5 right now. Ridiculous. |

I agree with you that you need the character guys. Hoping Bouma picks it up next year though. |

Big ticket UFA's just are not in the cards this summer. Need to sort out Johnny's & Monny's deals. Gio's 6.75mill kicks in & we need a goalie. I would have gone with Ramo for another 1-2 year deal but that injury may take longer to heal & it's too big of a risk & Ortio is too big of a risk to slot him in for 60-65 games. We also need to kill 2 birds with one stone & clear out the bad 1 year remaining contracts of Wideman, Smid, Raymond & Engellend. We no longer need these placeholders, we have young way cheaper guys to get their chance, that needs to start next year as well.
Currently we have just under $47 mill going into next year with cap. Add about 12 mill to that for Gaudreau/Monahan & Gio's raises & we will be sitting at 60 mill. Assume cap is at 70 mill. 10 mill to resign 2 goalie's, Colborne & Naks. Not a lot of room left for a big ticket UFA.
Now if you trade Wideman & Raymond(8.25 mill cap saved) to Dallas for Niemi or Lehtonen(5.0+ mill next 2 years), you just freed up some $$$ to either get a UFA or make a hockey trade. We just addressed our goalie situation without spending any valuable cap space. We need to get a place holder to tutor Ortio & let Gilles & Macdonald season in Stocton next year.
Arizona is going to need contracts to get to the floor next year, maybe Smid & a 5th for a 7th rounder? Helps Arizona get to the floor & if he goes on LTIR, all the better for them. Engellend can stick with us a 6th or 7th option for his last year.
BT needs to do a little housework before he can look too far ahead. JMO

Hah Nill still hasn't said he wants to move either Dallas goalie. Not sure he'd trade either of them for salary cap anchors either.
I feel like you should look into some press conference stuff around the time of the Neimi signing; Nill made it clear that he's fine with a bigger cap hit for goalies and it is a calculated decision.
Agree that big ticket UFA's arent a thing this year though.
Okposo would be ok but its probably more cap than we should give. Get the same "meh" feeling about aquiring/relinquishing his playing rights as Isles fans seem to get.
We'll probably sign one of the power fowards flying under the radar (Brouwer, McGinn, ect.) but one guy I think would play a mean style while scoring on Johnny's line is Perron. |

I like Okposo and I think we could.lock him up for a contract similar to Dougies 5 or 6 at 5.75. Only thing that worries me is he has played a lot of minutes with JT which I think may sque his numbers a bit. Honestly with all the potential in the system and most likely picking top 5, I would rather not sign him unless its a steal. BTW outside the top 4 ( Mathews, the 2 Fins and Tkachuk) I am all in on Dubois, i see him here playing on the island and he is a lock pick. |

yes, Todd. A 7 game sample is tiny. Take out the SJ game and how is that 6-game sample? haven't been superstar teams and they lost all but 2 of them. Score adjusted? |

So it's obvious and BT stated that the number one priority this off season will be finding a number one goalie. I think the biggest fish will be Frederick Andersen- how much is this going to cost realistically? Better not trade our 1st rounder this year!! Or there's Reimer, ward, possibly bishop (but he too will cost a crap load). What a bout a 2017 first, and a 2nd rounder?? |

I wouldn't trade a 1st rounder period for a goalie. Like you said FA or Reimer should be targets but at the right price. |

That's what I'm hoping for because I think the cost to acquire Frederick would be too high. |

Cam Talbot cost the oil a 2nd a 3rd and 5th for perspective. Also I asked this at the end of the last blog, what do people think of a Backlund for Hamonic trade? Is it that far off? Same age and salary? |

So you wouldn't trade a 2017 first rounder for Ben bishop? Andersen? Holtby? Lol. I would normally never trade a first rounder for a goalie but of it were for someone like Andersen or bishop- a bona-fide number one... I would have a hard time not. But not this year's obviously. Mannn I hope we get a top 3 pick |

I like Hamonic a lot and think he'd be a great fit next to Dougie... but I hate the idea of moving Backlund...
Stajan can't do the heavy lifting anymore, and guys like Arnold or Jankowski (the guys who might fill that 3rd line shutdown role) aren't ready yet.
Besides... with the emergence of guys like Nak and TSpoon, I think we might already have guys in the system that could fill our needs on the d line. |
