don't think Washington gives up Bowie for Hamhuis but maybe we could get a pick 1st/2nd and Siegenthaler the big swiss d-man that was very good at the world juniors - onesmallleap
The possibility exists that we could do Hammer 50% retained + 3rd for Bowey, or do something regarding that. |

true, just not believing the Capitals would risk another top prospect for an aging vet trade, but stranger things have happened |

Exactly! Hamhuis gets a minimum 1st from Wash plus a prospect. Bowey maybe too much to ask but stranger things have happened. But Wash can smell a cup right now and solidifying the backend with the likes of Hamhuis almost assures it.
Retaining 50% of salary of an expiring contract with 20 games left is basically worthless..... |

This TDL is a deal breaker for me on Benning. Moving vets for future pieces is an absolute must! |

Drafting a d man first round more often than not doesn't work out. I'd wait until late first round or second round and then take a d man for 3-4 straight rounds. Take Laine or Matthews first and then go from there. - Scooby_Doo
Sorry you're wrong,
2003 Ryan Super, Seabrook, Brent Burns,
2004 Mike Green
2005 Marc Staal, Matt Niskanen
2007 McDonough, Alzner, Shattenkirk
2008, Doughty, Erik Karlsson, John Carlson, Bogosian, Pietrangelo, Myers
2009 Hedman, Ekman-Larsson, Ryan Ellis, Nick Leeds
2010 and up I'll leave out because dmen takeo longer to develop
Pretty much all of the premier dmen were drafted in Round 1 |

If the WAS GM is dumb enough to give up a first for the 4.5 mil aging Hamhuis good for us I guess...can't see it.
Most likely will be a roster player that WAS needs to dump and an early 2nd. |

9 defencemen were drafted first round in 2004, and Mike Green is all you got... I think you proved my point for me, thanks. You're wrong!!! |

2005 ..11 d men were drafted first round. 3 of them became NHL regulars. Again, more often than not they don't pan out. |

Wrong, It lowers the cap hit and allows the deal to happen, you can get 2 x 5m players for 5m with 50% retained. Quite valuable actually. |

That's not exactly how it works boy wonder. Hamhuis cap hit with 20 games remaining is roughly $1 million (ie amount remaining on contract for season). 50% of that is 500 000. While helpful if the Caps need space for another deal but really that's not a lot of extra room...
Edit: given the fact the caps will have 6.5 million at the deadline makes my point more valid |

Ah nope, you choose one year out of the several I showed with dmen.
Just because one year doesn't pan out doesn't mean by the people I clearly showed who are top NHL dmen were all drafted in the 1st round. |

From where? Bettman hates admitting a mistake.... - chompsey
He gave Atlanta a team and then gave it back to Winnipeg. I don't think Bettman would get in the way of a relocation as long as it made financial sense for the existing owners. |

Glad to see you've decided to join the dark side. If we need vets to balance out the roster (as you've stated is important for a proper rebuild) then JB can pick some up during free agent signing period. |

I am neutral on that issue but will chime in on a piece of it.
NHL really had no choice but to allow movement. Atlanta owners were finished with the franchise and threw them the arena keys. After the whole coyotes fiasco the NHL knew another failure would be a disaster for the league and future investors, team values etc. No choice but to allow the deal to am interested buyer.
If it had not happened that way Winnipeg would still be team less. They'd never get an expansion franchise.
of course with the jets 3 min S.Tx Sales for 2 seasons got the attention of the league, but the cdn dollar right now is a deterrent. It may be the holdup on QC. |

You should have looked more considering 50 out of the top 100 dmen in points were 1st rounders, the next most was 18% from the 2nd round.
Keep your day job, you arguements have no merit.

2007 NHL draft. 11 dman taken in first round. 3 would be considered NHL regulars with an impact.
The beat goes on pal. You stink at this. |

Once again you look at one year only, you're a hack, if you think stats are only good for one year that's why I gave my stats out for last year top 100 dmen, 50 were drafted in the first round. So you either have no idea of how to read the scoring title or even the top dmen are because you're so focused on a single year's draft.
I hope Benning doesn't think like this because the Canucks will be totally screwed then.
