captain obvious chiming in here, but the teams is different without gost. he adds a combination of things they simply don't have without him. and they're a hell of a lot more fun to watch when he's in the lineup.
i can't say this enough, but my god, if even just 2 of our other d prospects hit it, we're going to be a force to be reckoned with. if you consider that provorov, sanheim, and morin could all reach their potential....3-5 years from now, look out. - hammarby31

in the scheme of things, i'd prefer the instigator penalty just go away there, unless it's crazy blatant jumping of a guy by another non-involved player. BUT, that's how they call it now - hit, other guy comes in to challenge, fight, instigator called. be (frank)ing consistent. - hammarby31
Yeah I think it is more about simmonds getting the penalty on his than it is Miller not getting called. I believe it was the second one simmonds got, but the dude dropped his gloves to fight right away. |

I usually don't pay attention to the NBCS broadcasts because, well, Pierre. But I have heard DH a couple times now and he gives good answers. Much better answers than most other coaches. - Scoob
i find most interviews of players and coaches a waste fo time, pre, during, and post game. but he strikes me as an intellectual coach with something to say...i think because of his appearance and demeanor more than anything else. |

The biggest flaw is that a lot of times, the initial incident, is the true instigator of the fight. - MJL

Nowhere in the rulebook does the word "jump" come up, nor is it implied. Miller came over to Schenn in retaliation for the hit on Krug (unless you would argue that he would have skated over to Schenn had there been no hit). Therefore, he skated over to him in retaliation for the hit, which is instigation by the rulebook.
Edit: I understand why it wasn't call, but per the rulebook, it was instigation. - jmatchett383
The only thing Miller did prior to Schenn moving first to drop his gloves, was give Schenn a slight nudge with his stick. That's not retaliating. There is no rule against coming over and letting a player know that you didn't appreciate the hit to his teammate. It wasn't a fight until it was obvious both players were ready to go, with Schenn dropping his gloves first, and at the very least dropping them at the same time.
Compare that to the much higher rate of aggression that Simmonds has come over with in defense of a teammate, in the past. Miller was very smart in how he did it.
I don't like the rule one bit, but I don't agree with the interpretation of the rule you offer, and neither did the refs.

Not clean hits - YuenglingJagr
Clean hits can be an instigator of a fight in reality, because players in some cases will look at a clean hit a cheap shot. Also as fans, we know and have seen clean hits that are really a cheap shot. Clean by the rules or not.

which is the main argument to why it shouldve been called instagator. The rule is meant to penalize players who start fights and in a league that is trying to cut down on fighting FFS we dont need to fight a guy after every clean check |

I thought Schenn dropped them first, actually. - Scoob
He did, check out the replay. A split second before Miller but Schenn drops them first technically. |

the amusing thing to me about the whole incident was the recipient made a big demonstration of schenn not being called. |

Not really, if two players are lined up for a faceoff, and one player said to the other let's go, and they fight, should the player who said lets go, get an instigator? He started the fight. Instigator is meant to penalize a player who is aggressive and comes over and takes off his gloves to fight, giving the other player no choice but to defend himself. Last night, if Schenn had simply skated up ice with the play, there would not have been a fight. |

My bigger concern was why Rinaldo didn't get anything for ramming MDZ into the boards what almost looked face first |

Schenn would've been well served to at least act reluctant. idk, I guess I'm more steamed that Simmonds DID get instigator penalties than I am that Miller did not. |

exactly. that miller dropped them a split second after schenn is irrelevant in my opinion. he didn't approach schenn to have a random conversation or threaten to fight him later or whatever. he engaged directly as a response to the clean hit on another player. the fight is the result. if that's not instigation, i don't know what is. |

Players come together all the time, after a hit. That doesn't mean there is going to be a fight. It's the level of aggressiveness by the player coming over to defend a teammate, that earns the instigator. Whether anyone feels that is right or wrong, that's how it is called.
