Eric Mellin: Is Holtby Worth It?
Holtby and Caps head to arbitration. - EricMellin
Cant pay a player who had a career year in his last year of deal,
maybe a bridge deal like CLB gave BOB, let Holtby prove its not a fluke..... |

Worth it. Pay him before another team drops 7m on him. |

He turns 26 in a couple months... |

I would pay him... really hard to find quality starting goalies... $6M for a good goalie is realistic... if his game gets even better than hes on a good deal. |

Holts has posted pretty similar numbers in every year he has played... And then his playoff stats are off the charts. Pay the kid what he's worth or trade him to Edmonton. |

Disagree..One good year does not entitle you to 6mil at 6 years.
5 and 5 is being very fair. |

I disagree. As the previous comment mentioned he has played well in all the playoffs. Oates tried to change him, (Oates is another story), and that was a debacle. Otherwise, he has proven himself as much as he can at this point. Give him a 4-5 year deal and be done with it. (and they will) |

10-2-2 .934
4-2-1 .922
23-12-1 .920
23-15-4 .915 (team missed playoffs, Oates fired the goaltending coach, told the goalies how to play[he's not a goalie.])
41-20-10 .923
Career playoffs over 3 seasons; 16-17 .935 (.944 this past playoffs)
That's a proven track record going back more than one good year.

I agree, but Mac needs to fight to keep it under $6 mill. Not that Holtby doesn't deserve $6 when comparing other goalies around the league...... |

bMac doing what GMGM was scared to do; play hardball with your own talent. GMGM was notorious for giving out unneeded extensions at market value, seemingly never getting someone on a deal. (Laich, Erskine, Pothier, Chimera, to name a few) BMac isn't afraid to put his foot down.
Ideally, I'd like a 5 mil bridge. |

Agreed. Your comments on GMGM are spot on. GMBM is more cautious on all contracts- which is wise. |

Here is an outsiders view. He's good but not Great. Which In Today's NHL means right around 5m. They are close enough to make this happen pretty quickly. |

And I'll agree with that. He'll need to prove himself a little longer to be in that category. However, if Holtby puts together another season on 2 like this last one.... |

He's going to continue to put up good if not better number with Trotz and Korn. Pay him. |

Holtby is a beast, sign the kid, as mentioned try to keep it below 6 but I still think we need to pay him what he deserves.
Id like to still stay competitive. |

Yes he is a legitimate number 1 goalie and he is still young. He will be a good goalie for years to come. |
