I would definitely take a chance on him. Albeit it's a double whammy - his high cap hit and health concerns. Still, a top 10 d-man in the league when he is healthy. Look at Bergeron - not that many people thought he would play again after his last severe concussion, yet he's come back to be one of the best two way players in the league and has not had any subsequent set-backs. A fairly big gamble but I would take it.

Yes, it seems that Laviolette's style wears thin more quickly than most of his peers. Not sure if he's that great of a coach but he did do a good job this year with Nashville (although he did have more offense to work with than Trotz did).

As concerns the UFA signings, I always thought giving up Orpik was a bad idea for Pitt. Of course the salary he received from Washington was far more than they could afford unfortunately (especially with the Letang contract, not to mention Crosby and Malkin).

And Niskanen and Engelland had good seasons which shows you that sometimes you've got to overpay a little to get a need filled.
