Just remember when next season rolls around and everyone starts getting hurt this is why Wilkes Barre won't be able to help Pitt out like this year. - Reverend Killtaker
Whatever we pick in this year and next years draft will not be in Wilkes Barre next season... and if they are.. they wouldn't be the ones we call up to help with injuries. |

Leafs Retained 50% of Winnik's contract in the deal.
Leaves you guys some cap room. - BINGO!

Sutter yes, Bennett no. - j.boyd919
Bennett is garbage and has looked worse than Sutter recently. Before that he was a healthy scratch. At this point BB would be most useful in WB. |

Sill is awful, that 4th round pick is never going to make it to the NHL, so we essential gave up next years 2nd for a rental... That's not too bad... and that 2nd is never going to amount to anything anyways. - j.boyd919
Nobody and I mean NOBODY is debating Sill but giving up a young player that obviously has value of some sort to other team(s) plus 2 picks is a lot. Don't say that 4th rounders never pan out because that is not at all true. Do they all? No they don't but again, its a prospect that could have padded the farm system a bit and then there is the 2nd round pick next year. All this on top of our other picks that have been traded away will mean a depleted farm system.
3 for a bottom six player is a lot especially when Winnick is not going to determine Pitts success in the playoffs.

Don't give a rats ass about Sill but I don't like giving up those picks. - canadianpenfan
Too much IMO. Glad Sill is no longer an option so that's a bonus I guess. |

We gave up way too much for a rental...wonderful - Reverend Killtaker
Agreed.. |
|
|
|
And if Winnik is resigned... all we did was give a 2nd round pick to not have to roll the dice on a draft pick. Same with Perron for a 1st - Guile
If he resigns, I got no issue. If he performs ill have less of an issue. |

Sill has no value here... I am in utter shock anyone wanted him. The 2nd round pick is the only true value we gave up, but it is in next year's draft. The 4th is a low chance of being useful, not a 0% chance. However, you should not rely on lower picks and finding gems, if you can retain these "rental" players acquired with lower picks in trades, that is a win almost always. |

No, Winnik by himself will not determine Pitts success, but having a well balanced Roster with a bottom 6 capable of doing SOME kind of damage will determine the Pens success. |

When did they help out this year, or any time recently?
I know nothing of Winnik, is he > Sutter? - sammy87
Yeah...being that Pitt only called up how many this season and last season? Come on man don't be that ridicilous or arrogant. Did they perform how we would have liked them to, no but come on. |

So they basically overpaid in order to get 50% retained? Is that about the gist of it? |

Looks likely that Pens were in on both Tlusty and Winnik for the same price, but decided to take Winnik after they agreed to retain salary. Canes then fired off Tlusty to the next highest bidder. |

That looks to be accurate. The Penguins couldn't do the deal if the numbers were any different. |

I disagree about giving up too much, we can acquire draft picks in another trade; I make this trade 100 times out of 100. Plus a 4th round pick is a crap shoot anyways, this is a good move and much needed to win now. Winning now has got to be the priority I love this strong play by Good Ole JR.
The second rounder hurts, but it wont hurt so much when we raise the banner next year. |

IDK, Rust, Farnham, Gibbons, Megna, Vitale, whoever else were the F call ups the past 2 seasons, did they were a sweater and take a roster spot, yeah....but are they useful in anyway and able to contribute at any level in the NHL? no. I don't think any of those guys are even in the NHL anymore. So no I think the WB team has been largely ineffective as to help out the Pens and develop NHL talent. Its fair to say the Pens farm system has been a failure recently. |

That 2nd rounder is not that big of a deal... Like you have been saying, Pens are in win now mode. They are going to be taking chances for the next 5-7 years. And I am ok with that 100%. |

It'll depend on how Winnik does this postseason and if the Pens can retain him after this. It would have been really nice to put Sutter in on this deal.

I love that the Pens picked up Winnik and I know Sill is hated on by a lot of people but I still think he brought a lot of energy every game. One of the hardest workers on the roster. It's not so much losing Sill that bothers me a bit, it's giving up 3 pieces for a 3rd or 4th line potential rental. I know there's no guarantees with picks in those rounds, hell, there's no guarantee with some first rounders, but picks are assets none the less. |
