How do you feel Staal at 6 vs Statsny at 7?
Does Statsny bring that much more to the table? - sammy87
Stastny puts up points, but for a third line center it doesn't make sense. That's where Staal shines. He can be the shutdown line and matchup nightmare if the other team doesn't throw a good shut down line on him. If they do, 87 or 71 are free. |

I think 30 NHL teams would want him. But it becomes an asset management issue. It can be done, assuming Carolina wants to move him, but it's a bit of a tap dance. |

I'm not sure if Jagr gets moved because Lou has lost his marbles. A trade asset like Ryder has been a scratch and Tootoo is getting 18+minutes a night + PP time. - willi
I would take Tootoo as well. |

Here are my thoughts on the Staal rumors.
Do I think the Penguins would have interest in bringing him back? Yes.
Do I think Staal would be up for returning to Pittsburgh even if for only 3rd line C? Yes.
Do I think there is a snowball's chance in hell that this happens this season? No.
I do think they will consider this after the season, especially if things don't go well in the playoffs. Cap wise it could work, but it wouldn't be easy, the Pens would absolutely have to find something to do with Scuderi (difficult) and Sutter (somewhat easy) would have to be moved. The year after would be a slightly harder scenario when Despres and Maatta are both up for new contracts. After that it gets easier as Dupuis and Kunitz will be off the books. The bigger problem I would have with this would be the trade for Staal. What would the Pens have to give up? I certainly would not give up what Carolina gave the Pens to get him. In conclusion, I don't think this ever happens. Is it plausible? Yeah, maybe, but I just can't see it working out great, so hopefully the Pens look into it and come to the same conclusion. |

Doesn't matter how many teams want him. Jordan Staal has a full NMC. Carolina would have zero leverage in negotiations if he said he didn't want to play for them anymore and wanted to return to Pittsburgh. Which is why giving full NMC in contracts is a bad idea. |

I think Francis would be okay with moving him, if it meant he could trade Eric and get a proper return for him... but that's a pretty big IF.
The other thing that people don't like to talk about is that the Staals put butts in the seats. Without them, this team isn't even kind of competitive.
Karmanos is trying to sell the team, and in order to get the value he's looking for, the team is going to need to improve.
Can the team be better next year without Jordan Staal? Probably not.
Can the market survive a full rebuild? It's increasingly unlikely, considering how much damage has been done over the past couple of seasons.
So do you sell the Staal's and risk the team moving, or do you keep them and probably flounder in mediocrity for another couple of years but successfuly sell the team? |

I agree...I think it's an offseason trade if anything. But the thing that gives it a slimmer of hope is that GMJR has big balls in trading.....like elephantitis sized balls. |

If he said he didn't want to play for them anymore, they are under 0 obligation to trade him. |

Yup, too many moving parts to do it in-season as far as making cap room.
Not sure if it's been brought up or not, but one thing to keep in mind for this season, is last year after all of the Kesler rumors, and Sutter being demoted to the 4th line, that is when his game picked up and he was very good down the stretch and in the playoffs.
If the by-product of #StaalWatch is Sutter playing better, then that is a win.
Worry about getting Staal back at the draft. |

Jim Rutherford gave up THREE 1st round piocks to acquire a young Glenn Wesley.
Jim Rutherford signed Sergei Federov to an offer sheet worth $38 Million in 1998. Detroit matched, making him the highest paid NHL player in history at the time.
Rutherford has never been afraid to spend to get the pieces he wants. He's always operated on the basis that he'd rather overpay to make sure he got what he felt the team needs as opposed to waiting and hoping something else turns into that piece. |
