Put Pouliot on the first PP, make the team shoot the (frank)ing puck on the PP. There ya go, PP problems solved. Pouliot is always looking to get the puck on net and he should stay on the first unit. Maybe it'll get the other guys to shoot once in a while as well. |

Islanders allegedly talking to NJ about Elias. That would be very weird. Like, Chelios in Wings gear weird. John LeClair in Pens black and gold. Lou would never do that. Would he?
Andrej Sekera keeps popping up as a trade target. I don't think he would bring anything to the table that one of the prospect D aren't already providing. I keep hearing lack of experience as an issue. Sekera has played 8 NHL playoff games. It's true that Sekera has been in the league a while and should be a bit more poised, but the kids who are top-prospect level are more than used to high pressure hockey at Jrs tourneys and so on. I would rather the kids gain playoff experience than a guy who is going to walk. |

Not gonna disagree with what you said except that this team's playoff roster should not be decided with any heed paid to "gaining playoff experience." The Penguins are a win-now team, so they should ice the team that gives them the best chance to win the Stanley Cup this season, with payoff experience being a happy by-product. |

Yeah, by-product is a good term. They're talking about a guy who has 8 games' worth of experience and really isn't a more influential player than Pouliot is now. 'Win now' is relative given the roster has been overhauled by half. |

I called the Penguins as my preseason favorite to win, and adding Perron and losing Maata are basically a wash, so I still stand by that. I think they are in complete "win now" mode.
But like I said, I agree with your assessment in general. |

I'm not a fan of Sutter and think Bennett sucks, but that deal doesn't serve a purpose. Getting two players older than Moses doesn't serve a purpose. - Oneonta Penguin
It does when you're adding Jagr. Zubrus is a steady center nothing special but he is huge so doesn't get knocked off the puck much.
If you're operating on the two year plan, Zubrus is signed through next year then UFA same as Sutter, neither of which we want to resign.
We could lose out on Bennett turning out to be great, but he isn't going to be as good as Jagr this year or next.
The purpose is to win the cup. Jagr and Zubrus make us better now and next year if Jagr re-signs. The cost is Bennett, which I will happily pay. |

Here's the scary thing about any trades this year for the Pens...
Will any of it be enough to get past the Isles in the playoffs?
I know that sounds crazy...but looking at the salary situation and the way the two teams have played against each other this year, my gut tells me the Pens are holding the short stick.
The Isles are definitely going to go for it in terms of short term spending and they have the cap room to do it. Rumors like the Jagr and Elias one (front page now on hocekybuzz) definitely sound legit and what a team in this position would do.
The Pens can't beat the Isles now...how will they ever if the Isles really go for it and beef up that roster even more for the playoffs? - icedog97
I hope the Islanders do add Jagr and Elias. I believe that would kill their chemistry and hurt their overall combination of speed and toughness that gives the Penguins problems.
Regular season means nothing when playoffs come. The Penguins had a good record against the Blue Jackets and Rangers last year in the regular season and were 3-0 against the Bruins in the regular season the year before.

im all for the win now attitude. definitely ice the team that gives you the best chance now. i just worry that their perception of what makes them have the best chance is going to be flawed.
if youre bringing in sekera, i dont think that deal will be a good thing, largely because of what it will take to bring him in will probably hurt more than help. but, viewed solely in a vacuum, sekera is a solid Dman, and has the ability to make a team better. i dont care if he has 0 playoff game experience. strictly between the two, if i need to win a game right now, i would take him over pouliot. (no, that does not mean i would trade pouliot for him).
but then when some of these names are bandied about, like hannan or hejda. i just really see no reason. pouliot is better than these guys, right now. |

Completely 100% crazy, but what would this wonderful board say to:
To Pit: Brayden Schenn, Braydon Coburn
To Phi: Beau Bennett, Derek Pouliot, Craig Adams
There's your new 3rd line center, and you get a top-4 defenseman locked up for under market value for this season and next (to replace one of Martin/Ehrhoff), plus we help you unload Adams (enough to offset the cap difference, maybe???)
Would never happen, but I think it's a deal that would help both teams and is more or less fair. |

and thats without considering any cost of acquisition. |
