not to sound haughty or anything, but if the comparison right now over the past couple seasons is the flyers, that further illustrates the problem.
no offense to them, but they shouldnt be the neighborhood market comparable.
they werent the ones who have had crosby and malkin the past few years. - stayinthefnnet

Also, the Briere move was fantastic at the time and got the team back to respectability. Just didn't last. - jmatchett383 So it was short term gain for long term pain? Kinda sounds like a kneejerk reaction

I mean, we haven't exactly had much to hang our hats on lately. 2008 is getting smaller and smaller in the rearview. |

come on. lets go down to xfinity and we can have a conversation about how giroux is infinitely better than crosby.
and also about how giroux is a wussy who doesnt do anything and isnt taking his team anywhere.
this conversation will be with the same person. |

What long term pain? The pain of still whooping the Pens five years into his contract? |

It was actually a market-friendly deal for a team with tons of cap space for a player in his prime who had just come off of a 90+-point season and back-to-back trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.

No, I'm working on the assumption that this team keeps plugging away with the same core despite constant early-round playoff exits. - jmatchett383
yeah, then in that case the Pens would not bring in an $8 million winger. Just won't happen. The Pens should realistically have 2 $5 millionish wingers, then 2 around $4 million, then 2 around $3 million. That should fill out the top 9 at around $45.5 million and leave the rest for Defense, Goalie, and 4th line. Looking at next year that will probably give them about $26.5 or $27.5 million. Take out $19 for Fleury, Letang, Scuderi, Maatta, Despres, and Pouliot and you have $7.5 - $8.5 for 2 D and 4 forwards, all of whom would be 4th line/13th forward and 5/6 d man and 7th dman.
The whole point being that I think the Pens are in decent cap situation going forward. Not going to be players on super expensive wingers, but if we can lock up Perron and Hornqvist for reasonable deals after next year, then they won't have to be. |

well, on the bright side, my broke and curmudgeonly self will at least be able to afford, and probably enjoy, phillies games in person again. |

So why didn't the excess cap space work for the last 4 years (until this year when you didn't have much until Dupuis went onto LTIR)? |

Hilbert? And Malkins wingers were hurt. Did you want Adams and Sill patroling his wing? Don't forget some good players have been claimed off waivers...kunitz, Lang, grabner, - willi
How could I have forgotten that, among all of the waiver pickups over the last three or four years, that one of them could've turned out to be 1997 Robert Lang.
Do you think the Penguins would interrupt Sid's line if Malkin was down a wing or two? |

briere was a great signing. it really was. and this is from someone who broke way too many things in his house due to watching him somehow score clutch goal after clutch goal against the pens, that seemed to defy logic each and every time.
was not only a great player for them on the ice, but really helped to pull them back from a down season that could have potentially spiraled. he got old, the flyers had a tool that was available to them (as it was for every other team) and they used it in a cost calculated move. dude was also pretty much a model citizen on and off the ice.

Last time I was at a game, we stayed for ~5 innings until my daughter decided she'd had enough.
How someone who is 2 feet tall and weighs 20 pounds completely controls the lives of 2 full-grown adults is still puzzling to me a year and a half later. |
