Jason Lewis: The Potential of Moving Justin Williams
The natural ebbs and flows of the NHL trade season. If you are a pending free agent your name is in the mix. If you are on a middling team your name is in the mix.
Now factor in a two-time Stanley cup champion and last year's Conn Smythe trophy winner.

My apologies to the Hurricanes, Justin Williams, Rod Brind'amour, the Hartford Whalers, and the entire Hurricanes fanbase and franchise for this grievous error.
But seriously, you guys are good. I wasn't even done with my second proof and there were already three comments about it. Shoooot, who needs a fact checker? |

He's the active player with the most cups, only reason why it immediately caught my eye |

Don't short yourself. It is your immense knowledge of hockey and hockey history that made it catch your eye. |

The guy is worth every penny of what he wants. I mean if we are going to pay Brown $5.8m per season while he puts up less than 30 points per (this will be his third straight year with less than 30 points), I don't see why we shouldn't pay $3.5m a year to a guy who will have put up 40 point seasons in 4 of the last 5 (the one he didn't was the lockout year).
I want Williams on my team in the playoffs, so if we are competing for a spot in two weeks, I'd rather risk losing him for nothing via free agency versus trading him and having to compete against him in the playoffs.
I wish the NHL would just say Voynov is suspended for the rest of the season so we could use his salary toward another player without risking him coming back. |

If Williams wants to stay in LA, he needs to push his agent to make a deal before the trade deadline. At least he could control the next 2-3 years of his future. |

That's the rub to me. It all potentially hinges on what Williams is asking for. Kings are already going to be tight on money so I can't imagine them signing ANYTHING 2+ right now. Even that would have to come at the right price. |

I don't see much value in moving Williams if we look like we're in the Playoffs. If the Kings traded him, it's going to leave a void on this team and it will hurt us. I say keep him til the end of the year, hope for the best. If he goes after this season the Kings should be able to shuffle things around a lot easier and start retooling for next year.
I think we still have a real good shot at a repeat. So slight tweaks here and there, go all in and go for Dynasty unlock. |

I would LOVE if the Blues could have Williams on our 3rd line. Our most glaring issue the last few years has been getting that one "big" goal against LA and CHI, & he's absolute money come playoff time. Having said that, I realize there's probably as much chance for Lombardi to trade with Anaheim or Chicago as St. Louis, (which is to say less than zero), but I guy can dream. |

Ya but he will cost 4 mill this summer, at least. He could cost a mid level prospect right now and give us a lot of depth to make a push during a career yr by price. As long as someone doesn't "accidentally" double drop kick his knee again. |

Yeah I couldn't believe the Habs lost him during that playoff run. No doubt in my mind it would have been LA/MTL final.... But I'm glad Kings got to play NYR. |

I wonder how Brown, Gaborik and Carter's contracts will effect the roster in a few years, and in 2021.. |

Habs would most likely have to trade their first in a deep draft. As much as I would like to see Williams here, you have to think about it. Price will still be in his prime for a few years, so I don't know. |

Brown is a different type of player, and during the playoffs he's every bit as important as the Williams, Carters, and Gaboriks. For example, without Brown in game 7 against Chicago, I don't think we advance, he was probably the best player on the ice for either team. He's not going to put up 30 or 40 goals, but his game has always been more than that. He was our second leading goal scorer just two years ago as well.

Gabo probably retires. |

What is the asking price for Williams if he makes it to the block? |
|
|
|
if the kings do decide to trade him, every playoff team would be in on it. he would immediately become the top player available. guy doesnt lose in game 7s... for that reason alone i would kill to have him... |
