until JT scores 100 points multiple times as well as 40-50 goals, I tend to agree with you. I view generational players as HOF guaranteed. Lemieux (mario), Gretzky, Yzerman, Sakic, those guys were godly in their era. Tavares I believe will get there, but he's not there yet. Top 5 in the league right now? I truly believe so, but generational for me is a step above. - Isles_since_6
id add crosby to that list.

Crosby.
Lidstrom.
Gretzky.
Lemieux.
Orr. (Colton, obviously)
Crosby is the only one playing today.
edit: I'm not even sure that Lidstrom makes that mix. He's on the fringe. - eichiefs9
Weber
Guy is an animal and it baffles me how others take the Norris from him year after year

Exactly. Once in a generation does not mean "the decades best player". It's like winning the Triple Crown..there doesn't always have to be one. |

crosby has to be on that list.
also id consider chara...one of the most dominant and physically intimidating dmen of all time with a huge shot from the blueline. |

Crosby career has been a drop bucket so far to be compared to anyone on that list. He's great, don't get me wrong... but I can think of sh1t load I would put ahead of him as game changing.
Chara is not even close to being a same breath as guys like Orr or Ray Bourque. Not even in the same conversation |

game changing isnt the criteria...generational talent is...crosby is this generations best player by a landslide.
edit: having said that, i think crosby has certainly changed the game. |

You may be on to something X. Clearly Bailey hasn't been given sufficient ice time and opportunities to flourish. It's obvious the Islanders are holding him back. That's why the second he moves to another team he will become an offensive powerhouse! We will all rue the day we let him walk.
- JimmyP
Ice time yes, Used properly no. Bailey is a passer that can score goals, he is good two way player as well.
So when Cappy puts him on LW and asked him to go grind in the corner for pucks how is that best utilizing his game?
Put him with someone that likes to shoot and shot often.
I know most feel bailey does his best when pressure is off, I argue that is partly true. If you looked at bailey end of season he was put to run the PP. |

its possible that chara was just super talented...for every "zdeno chara" there are a 50 "aaron ness"...come on, we cant just say that if players hit the gym they will become THAT much better... - LetsGoIsles
If you read my post I said that Work Ethic Was JUST as important as talent level. For every Chara How many Scott Scissons, Ryan O'mara, Chenowith.. etc. It takes both talent and Work ethic to be successful. |

I disagree on both points. I believe a game changer is what make a "Generational player" What in your opinion is a generation in hockey years? 10? 15? 20 yrs?
and what has Sid done to change the game? |

consider this...thru 550 games he has 216 goals and 769 pts. if we assume he plays 1,300 games which isnt too hard to imagine considering he easily has 9-10 years left in him, he is on pace to score 650 goals (14th all time) and 1820 points (4th all time)
hes already:
single handily saved the penguins organization
hes a 2 time art ross winner
hes a 2 time hart winner
won the stanley cup
2 time olympic gold winner
and hasnt even turned 27 years old. |

ya i read that...and i disagree...talent heavily outweighs work ethic. thats not to be confused with me saying that work ethic doesnt maximize talent. but work ethic wont make someone more talented.
a lot of really lazy players who dont have the best work ethic have thrived in sports.
i dont think anyone in the history of sports has become a good player bc of their work ethic. |

I would say there are players who are naturally gifted that can get away with being lazy but I would say a lot of players who had talent but didn't have the work ethic never made it or lasted very long because of not having a good work ethic.
You really don't think players have gotten better because of their work ethic? Say somebody like Dan Girardi who wasn't even drafted and now is one of the better D-men in the league. You don't think his work ethic got him where he is today? Of course you need talent but I think a lot of professional athletes will tell you without the work ethic you won't last very long. |

Tons of guys like that you can put on the list. I understand his point about needing talent but you can't underestimate somebody's work ethic. There are tons of players who made it because of their work ethic and not just because of their god given abililty. |

800 points 531 GP ~ Sid less point more games
977 GP 450 G 789A 1239 total points

I disagree with this point. Yes God given talent is needed at the professional level in any sport, but if you work harder than anyone else YOU will get better at anything you do in life. For every Kvasha there is a Dan Boyle, Steve Thomas, Rene Bourque, Jason blake, Belfour, Dino Cicorelli, Stasny, St. Louis, Mullen... and evern Mick Vukota who were undrafted but Worked their arse off to make it to the NHLl |
