Again, I'm all for a better 4th line - ob18
The biggest issue I find, in playing with the capgeek armchair GM, is finding a good third line winger.
I've toyed with keeping Schenn & leaving Couturier at 3C, also with Couturier as the 2C and Schenn traded for defense. But the rub continues to be 3rd line wing. That's my biggest concern or at least most unsettled spot.
The guys that they can afford as free agents, while addressing defense, are not really top six quality. Guys like Nik Kulemin, for instance.

I think that would require a couple of FAs then. This assuming VL is moved for table scraps - PhillySportsGuy
Yeah...mostly.
In the case of a guy like Gibbons, he got $550K last year. You can sign 3 guys at that rate.
Assuming they keep Schenn & Couturier, you have Laughton at 4C and then need one 3W and maybe two 4Ws. Of course they could start the year with Akeson and or McGinn in one of those spots and see how it goes. |

They also have Raffl. Schenn's Corsi was 55% with Raffl and Simmonds. If they can make Schenn a positive possession player without completely shielding him, I think it will just make the whole team better. Add Laughton and a D.Moore to the 4th line and you may have a positive possession team with the same defense as last year. |

Yeah, I got Raffl penciled in as 3rd line winger. He can play either side, so it works and he's got good speed & skills, so you can go with him & Couturier or Laughton, plus a guy like Bernier or even Winnik (for a few extra bucks) that is bigger & more physical.
If you have to keep Vinny, I really take a long look at using him on a line with Giroux as a RW, and you can have a really good third line with Couturier & Read staying together. |

If they have to keep VL, I'd try:
Hartnell-G-VL
Read-Schenn-Voracek
Raffl-Couturier-Simmonds
Laughton-Malhotra-Akeson or Rinaldo |

I wanted to see this from the beginning. I don't understand why the coaches have always felt G and Voracek need to play together all the time. I know Chicago is incredibly deep and has much better second options, but Kane and Toews normally don't play together.
Tbh, I don't really want to bring VL back under any circumstance. If he doesn't work on G's RW, you're stuck in the same situation as last year with nowhere to put him. On top of that, you'll probably have Laughton too. |

Everyone seems determined to keep Read with Coots, but I think the kid would flourish with Raffl and Simmonds while Schenn could really breakout playing tween Read and Jake |

I agree with not wanting Vinny back, but they can't buy him out, so if a trade doesn't happen, they might have to keep him. If that happens, and you have to keep a guy who is basically a stationary shooter around, get him with the best playmaker possible.
My view on splitting Giroux and Voracek is to try to get more lines capable of pushing play at ES. I really think Schenn with Voracek could be a damned good pairing that can do that. |

Agreed
Also, as PhillySportsGuy has said, if you keep VL get him on the top pp unit and let Jake be the primary playmaker on the 2nd |

I'm open to most ideas. My key is to have as many lines capable of carrying play as possible. I'd like to see Read get a shot in the top six, because I think that he can be the goal scoring winger that everyone thinks the Flyers need. |

You can also shuffle lines and pair up G & Jake when needed on the PP or at ES if needed. It's about options. |

I've wanted to split up Jake and G since last season. My dream was for the Flyers to sign Jagr and allow Jake to move down to the 2nd line. |

Exactly. It's not set in stone. If the team is down by a goal and Jake has it going then go ahead and move him up for the last few minutes of the game. Pens do it with Malkin and Corsby all the time. |

I'd be good with moving Read up to 1st line RW and dropping Jake, too.
Read PPG over last 3 years is 0.56
JvR PPG, last 3 years is 0.67 |

Wasn't anything big...just a grad party for a friend but I was playing drums and keyboard in songs that didn't have drums. Made some dough!
And I'm even more like E now...sipping down a few fingers of scotch. I have to cut it though and put a splash or 2 of water in. I'm sure he'll ridicule me

Perron anyone? - JAKEw1234
Why trade for a guy who scored 28 goals in a top line role, when you already have a guy who scored 22 in a shutdown line role, playing against tougher competition?
Trading for Perron would cost some sizeable assets. Matt Read is already here. Put Read in a top six role, focused more on offense and he might score 30 goals. |
