And also, what are you Easterners doing up this late. Normally by about 7:30MT I usually have the Penguins thread to myself. |

What has been the hold up to sign Niskanen. He's been the Penguins best defenseman the last two seasons. |

A nighttime blog? Wow...
Yes, trade Orpik please... Under normal circumstances that wouldn't happen, and with Letang & Martin hurt, it definitely won't.
Why isn't Niskanen extended? |

I have to say yes that I would deal him as well.
If he was still the player he was a couple of years ago then I wouldn't even with him being an UFA but he's not the player he once was. |

Crosby has a 13 point gap over Kessel for the Art Ross. But Giroux is the best player in the world.

i would no question, could EASILY get a 2nd out of him.
with Letang and Martin, you'd think it would be a possibility, but no way it happens this year.
side note, Despres is killing himself tonight. |

Don't you dare question Despres. He is the best Penguin defender. He has just been mistreated by management and coaching. |

Other than a Penalty that most dman get away with, I thought Despres has been solid. Sutter on the PP, must be showcasing him for Van |

I'm not sure you trade him at this point. If Pittsburgh is looking at rental defenders with the injuries than just consider Brooks at this point a rental. |

If you're a GM, you have to treat it like a business and do what your head says. There is no room to follow your heart. If we can get any sort of return for BO, its better than watching him walk away for nothing in the offseason.
I think its worth mentioning that 2 years ago I wanted to run Martin out of town. Then Niskanen last year. Each guy has come back in a big way and I would love to see such a resurgence from Brooksy. But with all our D prospects, I just don't see how he fits into our plans for next year. |

Last year on trade deadline eve I was literally seconds away from going to bed when all of the sudden news came that the Penguins traded for Iginla. I was up for hours after that. Don't know what time I will go to bed tonight. |

I voted no simply because of depth. What if Martin has a setback or we lose another guy? If they can get another experienced blueliner tomorrow, by all means, see what you can get for Orpik.
I want no parts of Engo in the playoffs....I'm done with that show. |

Good post. I agree with the sentiment and the proposed management of assets. Orpik could bring in a young forward or, if Ottawa is to be believed, a first round pick (see: Phillips, Chris).
Teams that must do something this season would likely overpay - or in the case of a team like Edmonton - overpay because they must acquire players by means other than free agency.
What's more, the faster the Penguins turn over their defense to the younger guys, the faster the culture can and will change from their current complacency and manner by which they welcome the opposition to the net in odd numbers. |

I really don't know the value of Orpik. I know that defensemen are perceived as hot commodities right now - see Doug Murray last year -two second rounders for a physical but slow blueliner. Do you expect that type of return for Orpik based on the return for Murray last year? I don't think you get a good impact prospect.
I would be all about trading him if not for the injuries. He isn't returning next year either. He can't. The extension of Letang basically took his salary. With Letang and Martin out and by trading Orpik, you have Niskanen, Maatta, Scuderi, Despres, Bortuzzo and Engelland. If one of those go down, you only have two options - both in the AHL and I believe one of them is hurt.
Tough call. I do agree though, once Scuderi was signed, Brooks became redundant. |
