I'm self taught, but have been playing for about 30 years now. Did the band thing for many years, played in various clubs in a few resort areas, even spoke to a record company but got derailed by life in general. Still play often, but haven't done anything in a band format for over a decade. I'm a legend in the arena of my basement!

Awesome. There's are some of videos of me on youtube from my old band, but I'm not sure I want to reveal my identity. Not that I'm famous or anything, I just don't want people coming after me if I say something "off-color" here!

been playing for 25 years or so. while I love the shred guys, I'm a HUGE Eddie VH fan...not considered shred by today's standards. I took lessons for years from Petrucci, so it was kinda cool seeing his name pop up in this thread. He's a monster player and a great guy. I love all players mentioned in this thread...

Wow, I bet you can really play. What do you like to play?

Its funny, there is a guy here at work that has been playing for 25 years, he does not play at all without a pick, he plays no country or Blues. Which I find different, I think you should learn to play the guitar, not just one style. Learn to play it. I know it will take years, but what a great hobby.

Mostly rock...but I really like to play bluesy stuff as I get older and my chops deteriorate! I played in a VH tribute band for a while, and my original stuff was more progressive rock. That's the JP/Dream Theater influence. I record some guitar instrumental stuff from time to time, but I haven't put it all together to release a solo album. I'd like to finish recording a solo record eventually, it's on bucket list!

My main guitar is a Ibanez Jem7 (Vai model). I also own a custom "Frankenstrat" (red, white and black stripes) for when I did the VH tribute, and I have a Music Man JP6 (Petrucci model). I also have a Dean acoustic, but my out of shape fingers have trouble with that one lately.

I'm pretty sure my wife wants to smash every instrument I play over my head. My 3 1/2 month old son though looks at me like I'm a god when I play the acoustic for him. He probably thinks I invented the rhythm to "Melissa."

My daughter is just learning to play now. I was always a bit of a natural when it came to music. I could typically listen to an album 2-3 times and play it through, so lessons never seemed necessary. That said, there were plenty of times I wished I had a more technical background but sometimes not knowing the rules helps you to cross boundries others couldn't.

My style is very much in the model of Page, meaning that I play everything but am centered with the blues. I have a few other influences who include Gordon Lightfoot, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Buckley, Alex Lifeson to name a few.

Very nice. It is a very addictive hobby. The more you learn, the more you want to learn.

I love switching back to the electric after playing the acoustic for a few months...I feel like I can do anything.

I was going to invite Dee to 'join the discussion' and provide a link to Dans blog but figured I'd keep in to a minimum.

Totally true. The thing is, you'll never reach the end. There's no end in sight with guitar since there's always more to learn. It's easy to get caught up in upgrading gear too. Be careful, it could get really expensive!

Amen. I've been playing more acoustic than anything for the last three years. When I switch to one of my electrics (I use Ernie Ball super slinky's), which makes string bending waaaaaayyyy too easy!

Yup, so worth it if you can get past that "bleeding fingers" stage with the acoustic.

For sure they can get expensive. Like many wines, you can get a get one without spending a ton of cash.

Dan asked us to behave. We should respect that, at least until things settle down. It's got to be killing her.

Regarding strings, do I go heavy or light, what is the advantage of each?

Eh...we're each responsible for our own behavior. That said, I'm not really interested in bothering with her at this point.
