Posted this last blog and I'll post it again to get more opinions:
We should absolutely NOT grab a D with our 1st pick. If we want D, trade up from 16th to around 12-13 and get Pulock. Then get someone like a Lindholm or Monahan if they fall to 8th. Nurse hovering at around 15 all year then suddenly going nearly top 5 without doing anything extraordinary makes me want no part of him. The top 10 in this draft is too filled with offense to grab a D man. Also, we'll have to trade up to around 6 to get Nurse, where there are some studs that will be still available, him not being one of them.

Garth, Preds did not have 14th pick, Flames did. We traded NSH pick for CGY pick |

I'm not opposed to the idea of the Preds trading their pick but right now, it might not make sense for the club to do so. They can continue to have so-so offense with grinders or they can get a player that can lead them into the future. Like Fenton said, it'll have to be an offer he couldn't refuse. |

I think you're giving GM's too much credit. |

I agree with you on the second pick and selecting a D. I think Monahan and Lindholm will be gone for sure. I say take shinkaruk or Domi at 8. Even at 16 you will get a quality D cus most teams will be looking at a forward, One of Ristolanian, Nurse, Zadorov, Pullock, Hagg or Morrisey will be there. |

As I've said & many others, it will cost a kings' ransom to move up into the top 5 in this year's draft.
It's one of the deepest in history according to scouts & GM's, very similar to the 03 draft.
That's why any team holding a top 5 pick can ask for whatever they want & if they get a sucker willing to overpay as stated in this blog, then it could happen.
But just simply offering a swap of first rounders plus a prospect isn't getting it done.
Pay the piper or disappear - simple as that. |

I personally see the top 7 going:
COL - Jones
FLA - MacKinnon
TB - Drouin
NSH - Barkov/Nichuskin
CAR - Nichuskin/Barkov
CGY - Lindholm/Nurse
EDM - Nurse/Lindholm
So I think we could potentially get Monohan or Lindholm, because I don't see Nurse going past CGY/EDM. |

If the Flames pick Monahan, I doubt the Oilers will pick Lindholm. They don't need his kind of play. They might elect to trade back to pick Lazar, Erne, or Gauthier. Buffalo could be in a good position to get both the 7th and 8th if they so chose. |

Lindholm said hes staying in the SEL for 1 more year to honor his contract. Have to believe that both Calgary and EDM are looking for help right now. That makes me think that Lindholm will fall to Buffalo at #8 unless EDM trades that #7 away to a team that wants Lindholm. |

For me: jones, mackinnon, drouin, barkov, nichuskin, lindholm, monohan.
Feaster and the Flames are the wild card i dont think they even know what there gona do until they do it. I dont see how they can pass up on Lindholm, he has a bigger upside than Monahan. The oil wont take a D, they have several D prospects coming and zero forwards coming up. If they dont get a Monahan i think they move the pick. |

Calgary will take a forward, probably Monahan, and Edmonton will either pick Nurse (people think they won't,) trade, or pick Monahan if Calgary picks Lindholm. |

Vanek for 4th & Whom??? - jbickle
no chance in hell that kind of deal happens.
While Vanek has the skill to fetch a killer return he has a cap hit of over $7M which with the cap dropping a team like Nashville will never give up a potential elite player with an entry level deal for that kind of cap & cash hit.
Also considering that he only has one year left on his contract no team is stupid enough to trade a top 5 pick for possible rental.
While a deal involving Vanek and Nashville's 4th overall pick isn't impossible, because of everything I said above I believe the deal wouild have to be something like:
Vanek
16th overall
for:
4th overall
cap dump (a player that has enough skill to play for Buffalo, but still a dump) |

As much as I want no part of him, I don't think Nurse slips from 6th where he's ranked to 8th. |

I don't see the Sabres trading there 8th and 16th in facted i see the sabres getting two more picks in the top 15 somewhere between 9th and 15th. so what i'm saying is the sabres could end up having 4 first round pick in this years draft.
How would this play out its simple Vanek and Miller.
Vanek and Miller are easily a top 15.
are they worth a top 10: maybe
are they worth a top 5: no
If Paul Gaustad is worth the 16th pick then Vanek and Miller can get you in to the top 15.

Top 5...
Jones
MacKinnon
Drouin/Nishushkin(Tampa has a hard-on for him)
Barkov
At #6, the Flames are picking either Lindholm or Monahan(Many think it's Monahan) but IF they do pick Lindholm, the Oilers will be doing cart-wheels & pick Monahan faster than Bettman can say who's on the clock next.
Edmonton is one team that no question is trying to move into the 4 slot so they can actually select Barkov but the price may be too steep for their liking.
But they will settle for Monahan & be leaping for joy if he slips to them at 7.
So what i'm saying, Nurse is the player that's going to drop!! |
