Rebuilds, in my opinion, are most readily defined by the standings, draft position, signings and trading decisions. If a team is making decisions that are consistent with decreasing regular season performance and trying to improve draft outcomes, they are in a rebuild phase. But, just because you have put yourself in rebuild mode it does not mean it will work.
I am not convinced the Leafs have figured out what they are about and what they need to do in order to have a successful rebuild. Yet, the first stages of this Leaf rebuild appears to me to be going pretty good. - spatso
Every team tries to unload their impending UFAs at the deadline if they are out of the playoffs.
That alone is not a sign of a scorched earth re-build, especially when it comes to a team like the leafs who are jammed up against the Cap. The need to do something that proves what they say they're going to do. So far it's not happening, and may not happen until the draft or the summer, if it's going to happen at all.
They already proven this core is not going to win at any level, they've gotten rid of GMs and coaches, and not the claim is they're going to scorch the earth and do a complete re-build...................so far no sign of that. |

I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt. As I said before, I believe they want to rebuild. We just don't know if they are going to be any good at getting it done.
Hard to trade Clarkson, hard to get a good return for Phaneuf. Should get good return for Bozak. The real test will be what they can get for Kessel. I believe they will get a good return. But can they hit a home run (eg 2 1st round picks).

Well he's not a GM. And the cup win in 07' in Anaheim he got virtually no credit for. - RogerRoeper Just look how he set the leafs up before he was fired, enough said .Guy cant[b ] quietly build a team through the draft .He needs to make big ,often very expensive moves.Nonis may have extended Phaneuf and Kessel but dont you think BB would have done the same ??.He set this team up for failure

So this time, it'll be a scorched earth traditional re-build, or at least that's what they're saying.
To date there is no tangible move made by the leafs to indicate that this is what is actually going to transpire.
Until there is an actual trade of a player, a core player with term left on his contract, or something similar, then and only then, will I believe they are stripping the leafs done to the wood, and re-building through the Draft and development route.
For the sake of the true leaf fans, I hope this happens. - Doppleganger

Yes, now it is on.
Gotta hand it to Nonis, he managed to trade the most untradeable contract in the NHL.

Fantastic trade. And he dumped him with 5 years left after this one. No salary retained. |

By this time next year Clarkson will be back to his New Jersey form. |

It's funny how people bump this thread when Burke's been gone for so long. - RogerRoeper
Yeah, you're right. |
