not really...I think you have to pay some premium to get him to agree to a 1 year deal... |

THey have cap space and it's only for one year. This was a good move for the Canes. Experiment on a top 6 player. |

Its odd though. 1 year deals are for guys like Brad Boyes. Guys you aren't even sure if they are even good enough to be in the league anymore or older guys who might retire. Semin is neither. None the less it should be a fun season for Canes fans. |

He's likely going to sign for 3 years.
No team is willing to make the 4-5 year commitment and he's not willing to be a short-term guy. Some team is going to offer him 3 years at 6.7 million per, what he made last season, and that's probably going to be his deal. - _Zippy_

It would be if it were a multi-year deal. With cap space, dropping $7 million on him is a pretty risk-free (and potentially great reward) signing IMO. I was hoping he would either re-sign in DC for less money or head West to Detroit. |

Do I get Ek's job?
First, to be clear, I do NOT have an inside source of any kind. This was pure intuition and speculation. It just makes too much sense in my mind.
And despite about a dozen posts saying otherwise, I think I nailed in betting that despite all the positioning and posturing there were actually very few, if any, real/today offers on the table for Semin. Pretty much all were the "we might make this offer IF other stuff does not pan out" variety.
I look at it like this:
--Canes needed to spend about $3M somehow to get to the floor anyway.
--So they are really only paying about $4M.
--For a guy who talent-wise is elite.
--And as I said in the blog, I think the NHL is completely overcounting risk for a short-term deal for Semin and completely undercounting risk in the last 4-6 years of a 12-year deal FOR ANYONE.
Worst case is that Semin flops completely and the Canes too partly because of it. It is all over by this time next year with no further cost and even in a worst case scenario, Semin garners a 3rd round pick at the trade deadline from someone who needs offense.
This is probably an even longer shot than when I called the Cole return awhile back. I think I might just have a beer on this one tonight. |

Very good analysis of the whole thing and I agree completely.
Fact is, the Canes are a better team with Semin.
GO GET THAT BEER!
