The Calgary Flames took care of some housekeeping on Monday by signing defenseman Brett Kulak to a one-year contract extension worth $650,000.
The 23-year-old defenseman appeared in 21 games with the Flames last season and tallied three points.
While Kulak didn't bring much to the table offensively in terms of counting totals, he did drive possession and garnered much better results than Matt Bartkowski on the 3rd pairing.
Kulak and Bartkowski played primarily with Deryk Engelland so they were given a level playing field. Kulak was simply better.
Barring a left-handed defenseman like Juuso Valimaki or Oliver Kylington really impressing in camp, I would expect Kulak to beat out Bartkowski and take the final roster spot inside the top-6.
In the event Kulak doesn't make the team, he would need to clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL, which I don't see happening.
One way or another, he should find himself in the NHL full-time this season.
