The New Jersey Devils have suffered three straight losses and start their three game home stand tonight against the Ottawa Senators. Currently, the Devils record is 9-9-4 with 22 points and could get back on the winning track this week if they can beat their struggling opponents.

The Senators (6-15-1, 13 pts), Philadelphia Flyers (8-10-4, 20 pts), and New York Islanders (5-10-5, 15 pts) have struggled mightily this season. The Devils should beat all of them and gain six solid points. But they play John Hynes’ Nashville Predators at the Rock and will give them some trouble, especially after that Black Friday loss to the Preds 4-2. The Preds dominated that game and Devils looked sluggish till the 3rd period.

The Devils need to make a statement this week after having some hard practices in the past 10 days in between games. We’ve seen this in previous years where they start the season with promise. Then fall off a cliff after 15-20 games played. The team will spend the rest of the season playing catch up in the standings and would have a moral victory on improvement in their play in the last quarter of the season but still no playoffs.

Now, they have an opportunity to break this trend.

The Devils have no excuses. These are winnable games and the Devils roster is healthier now than they were at the start of the season. They need to play a more simplified game and dictate the pace. They must play a high energy and fast tempo game but must protect the puck, especially in their own zone. Hopefully these hard practices Lindy Ruff has been conducting will start paying off dividends as he has been blunt in press conferences in assessing the problems. Play a FULL 60 minutes!

If not, it will be a long season again for your New Jersey Devils
