Be careful what you wish for when you have a bad GM

Anybody with either passionate or casual interest in the Penguins wants the team ie Ron Hextall, to take action and improve the current product. It is obvious the team needs help and it is obvious it won’t come internally. Also, be careful what you wish for. Such is the problem of having a bad general manager. Because when you finally get a move, it doesn’t mean it will actually be good.

There are rumblings via Elliotte Friedman that the Penguins are finalists, with the Bruins, to land Luke Schenn, a former Hextall Flyer. Not only does the team not have a need for a bottom pairing right defender, but it wouldn’t even be an upgrade over someone like Chad Ruhwedel.

If this is the answer, they aren’t asking the right questions.

Some people ran with the idea of Jeff Petry being available for trade, but the sources there were isolated and not the normal avenue of pertinent information.

Strip away the sources and look at things with basic logic. Jeff Petry’s contract and age is effectively a no trade clause at the moment. If Petry was playing great the Penguins wouldn’t want to move him, they’d be happy with the situation. If they do want to move him, it is because he isn’t playing well. Combined with his contract why would that be appealing to another team? It wouldn’t be.

The Penguins are back in action tonight and are hosting the Edmonton Oilers. At least if they lose again the likelihood of Connor McDavid doing really cool things is high, so there’s at least that to look forward to.
