Maple Leafs Offseason: A Blueprint for Rebuilding the Bottom Six

In yesterday's article, I mentioned Brandon Tanev as the first piece in the puzzle to stabilizing the Maple Leafs' bottom six. Today, I will build upon that by looking two more players who can further transform the team's style. The first player is a complementary piece with high upside potential, while being a buy-low contender.

Tanner Jeannot
Tanner Jeannot was supposed to be a premier power forward for the Tampa Bay Lightning, but his tenure was a disappointment. A trade to the Kings last summer didn't spark his offense either, and he now enters unrestricted free agency at 28.

Still, Jeannot brings qualities the Leafs desperately need. His physical game remains undeniable-he tallied 211 hits last season while skating just 11:01 a night. He is also a proven penalty killer, a skill he honed in Nashville. With that physical edge and a willingness to drop the gloves, he is an ideal replacement for Ryan Reaves on the Maple Leafs 4th line. With the possibility of gaining playing time on the Leafs second power play unit, Jeannot could also have an opportunity to find the offensive skills he seems to have lost.

Prediction: 1 Year / $1,750,000 Cap Hit

This is the kind of signing that would finally give the Maple Leafs a truly functional fourth line, one that doesn't just eat minutes, but takes a physical toll on the opposition with a relentless forecheck.

But the upgrades can't stop there.

According to reports from Elliotte Friedman, a compelling target for the third line is available via trade. The Leafs are short on top prospects and high end draft assets, so landing a superstar is out of the question. However, targeting a young, cost-controlled forward about to breakout is the perfect strategic move.

Making Jack McBain the ideal candidate.

Jack McBain
Now entering his fifth NHL season, McBain is in his last year as an RFA, and the Utah Mammoth are reportedly listening to offers. Standing 6'4" and weighing in at 220 Ibs., McBain is a versatile power forward who can play both center or on the wing.

McBain’s value extends well beyond his size, as he is a reliable penalty killer who thrives in tough matchups. He scored 13 goals last season (12 at even strength) despite taking on defensive responsibilities, with over half of his shifts starting in his own end. Still, he managed to consistently out-chance the competition. Add in his 291 hits (6th in the NHL) and 8 fights-and you have a player who can drag his team into the fight and turn the tide when goals dry up, something the Leafs have lacked for years.

Prediction: Maple Leafs acquire Jack McBain for Bobby McMann and a 2025 2nd Round Pick (FLA)

McBain's addition helps the third line begin to take shape and at just 25-years-old he is a prime candidate for a breakout season. This leaves the Leafs bottom six looking as follows.

Tanev-Laughton-Jeannot

Check back tomorrow for the final two pieces of the Leafs bottom six remodel.
