Canucks Have PTO Candidates to Consider

With training camp right around the corner, we have seen several professional tryout (PTO) contracts signed around the league. Former Canucks like Zack Kassian (Anaheim Ducks), Jordie Benn (Dallas Stars), Alex Chiasson (Boston Bruins), Brandon Sutter (Edmonton Oilers), and Sam Gagner (Oilers) are among the long list of players.

At the time of this writing, the Canucks have not joined in on the PTO party. The Canucks have some decent options to choose from if they want to add to their training camp roster, however.

Max Comtois is one player who immediately stands out. The Canucks have been connected to the 24-year-old winger this offseason. Due to this, the idea of signing him to a PTO is not out of the question.

Comtois appeared in 64 games last season with the Anaheim Ducks, posting nine goals and 19 points. Although these numbers are not necessarily jaw-dropping, he notably led the Ducks with 33 points in 55 games during the 2020-21. Due to his past success and young age, looking at him on a PTO could be worthwhile for the Canucks. He would be a decent bottom-six option who provides secondary scoring and physicality.

Another forward who would make for a decent PTO addition is old friend Tyler Motte. This past season, Motte split between the Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers, posting eight goals and 19 points in 62 games.

The Canucks would benefit from adding another bottom-six forward to their group before the start of the year. Motte would be an excellent addition, providing solid defensive play, grit, and versatility. Thus, there would be no harm in taking a look at him on a PTO.

Defensive options on the free-agent market are somewhat limited right now. Yet, if the Canucks want to add more depth and experience to their roster, Nick Holden is a player worth eyeing. It would not hurt for the Canucks to add another left-shot defenseman to their depth.

Holden, 36, appeared in 65 games last season with the Senators, recording two goals and 16 points. If signed to a league-minimum deal, he would be a decent bottom-pairing option or even a seventh defenseman to have around.

Some other PTO candidates who also could make sense to look at include Colin White, Nick Ritchie, Adam Erne, Noah Gregor, and Zach Aston-Reese. Longtime Canuck Alex Edler is still without a home, so he's another player to watch.

We will need to wait and see if the Canucks sign any players to a PTO before the start of training camp from here.
