Canucks' 2023 Offseason Trade Candidates |
|
|
|
The Vancouver Canucks have only seven games left to play this season. Although they have been finishing the year on a strong note, it is clear that changes to their roster will occur this summer. It is not a secret that they are looking to free up cap space and retool their current group. Thus, we should expect trades fairly early on in the offseason from them.
As a result of this, let's discuss a handful of the Canucks' 2023 Offseason trade candidates.
Brock Boeser GP: 67 G: 16 A: 36 PTS: 52
Brock Boeser is a player who fans should pay attention to this offseason. He was heavily shopped leading up to the deadline, but a move was not finalized. Yet, it is certainly possible that things will change on that front during the summer, as teams will have more cap space freed up. At this juncture, a change of scenery is the best course of action for the Minnesota native. Look for the Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, and Pittsburgh Penguins to be in the mix for his services.
Conor Garland GP: 74 G: 14 A: 27 PTS: 41
Conor Garland stands out as another winger who the Canucks could look to part ways with this offseason. His name has come up in the rumor mill before, and it would be beneficial for Vancouver to trade out his $4.95 million cap hit until the end of the 2025-26 season. Some teams who have been linked to the Massachusetts native include the Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Calgary Flames, and Montreal Canadiens.
J.T. Miller GP: 74 G: 29 A: 46 PTS: 75
The Canucks held trade talks centering around J.T. Miller before the deadline passed, but a move did not come to fruition. As a result, they could look to move him before his big contract extension and full no-movement clause kick in on July 1. The Penguins expressed interest in him, so they are a team to watch in the potential sweepstakes. Two other clubs that stand out as possible landing spots for him include the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche. Yet, if he stays put, it certainly would not be a bad thing, as he is once again producing over a point per game.
Thatcher Demko GP: 28 Record: 11-13-4 GAA: 3.37 SV%: .894 SV%
Thatcher Demko's name came up in the rumor mill before the trade deadline passed as well, so it feels fair to include him on this list. However, when noting that he has dealt with injury trouble and has struggled this season, it might be best for them to hold onto him instead of moving him while his trade value is lowered. He is also a prime bounce-back candidate for the 2023-24 season, as he displayed just last season that he can be a real difference-maker in net.
Tyler Myers GP: 71 G: 1 A: 15 PTS: 16
The Canucks are likely to shop Tyler Myers this summer, as it would be ideal to move out his $6 million cap hit. He was also in the rumor mill leading up to the deadline, and he was linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs specifically. As a result, there could certainly be a market for him when teams have more salary cap available during the offseason. However, he also has some say over where he will end up if moved, as he has a 10-team no-trade list.
Other possible trade candidates: Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Nils Hoglander, Ethan Bear
Nevertheless, it is clear that the Canucks could be in for some major changes this summer. We will need to wait and see if any of these players end up on the move from here.
