Crain’s Detroit (paywall) chimed in on the lawsuit for the NCAA. It’s no secret that sports are a cash cow for Universities, and now it looks like the way has been paved for student athletes to receive compensation outside of sponsorships and scholarships. So, what does the trickle down look like?

More than anything, I think it’s going to be a hard line of negotiations on how to divvy up the funds. Back in the 90s I was a Resident Advisor at Western Michigan University. Smaller state college, but in terms of athletics football was the big program. For the University of Michigan and Michigan state in terms of dollars, those are the big haul programs.

The summer preparations were at the same time as pre season training for football. The players ate at the same cafeteria as the dorm directors, but had a very different menu. Steak was on tap for the Bronco squad. The head director explained to us that, in sports, football was bringing in about 70% of the revenue. Most programs operated at either a loss or closer to break even and were subsidized from the money that came in. That year, men’s gymnastics were cancelled and a resident in my dorm lost his scholarship and had to transfer. The program was just not bringing in money.

For hockey, it depends on the school. However, the current rules for draft development have an either/or route. Either you go the professional route and get paid at whatever level or you can play in college. If salaries are introduced, can players change their mind after a year of jr or pro international play? It will at least be interesting to see it play out. Let me know your thoughts as this all pans out.

Late yesterday I posted a highlight clip for Detroit. Take a look in case you missed it. This is just an interesting turn for the NHL’s system.
