During the pregame examination I openly wondered if Detroit could maintain their current pace. They could not. Newcomer Vrana was unable to keep scoring momentum registering just a single shot on net and 2 giveaways. This isn’t meant as a knock, it’s the reality that Detroit’s system makes it hard to create offense.

The first two periods were well played by the Red Wings, but the scoring just wasn’t there. Chicago’s calling card is scoring on the rush. If the goalie can kill a penalty or withstand a cycle, Kane will be waiting in the neutral zone for a pass. The Blackhawks have zero interest in defense. They have immensely talented forwards, and if they can get the puck out of the defensive zone, they can bury it. For the third, forget about it. Chicago found their swagger and buried the Wings.

Detroit and Chicago are in vastly different situations. Chicago is clinging to the final vestiges of the championship powerhouse. They have added high power forwards to the mix and look for “adequate” goaltending. I’ve never seen this team care so little about their own end of the ice. All energy is spent on offense and tonight, it worked.

Detroit’s efforts up front were solid, but the urgency wasn’t there. The team just seemed to be on autopilot, believing the scoring would show up eventually. That may be the worst result of a three game win streak. Detroit can’t afford to be complacent in any zone, and on any scoring chance. The intensity this team needs to compete wasn’t there. For Chicago, a goal is all it takes to get the team zipping.

Detroit’s defensive strides have been important ones. Today was just an ugly reminder that, a far as goal scoring goes, this current roster is one of the least talented in the league. Mentally, when the second Chicago goal went in, it scrambled the Wings. It ends up being difficult to watch when the team isn’t committed to making the plays that will bring them success.

Detroit’s situation will continue to improve, slowly. And, Chicago on the other hand, will continue to degrade. At some point, big decisions will be made by Wirtz and Co that will start more of a full rebuild. They certainly have some impressive offensive assets to create that foundation.

The road ahead, the final 10 game stretch, sees a bizarre 4 game stretch next against Dallas. 2 at home, 2 away. 3 versus Columbus, 2 versus Tampa bay and one versus Carolina. Dallas believe they’re not out of it yet, and the next four games are going to see a desperate team trying to get back to the post season after being cup finalists just a year ago. Tampa Bay will be in cup tune-up mode, as will Carolina. Columbus, believe it or not, is only one point ahead of Detroit. What a bizarre season.

Tonight’s version of Detroit is one we are all too familiar with. It’s the losing Hyde to the successful Jekyll. Blashill’s decision to pull the goalie on a 5 on 3 with 5 minutes left was mind boggling. That isn’t the identity of this team. It all but destroyed any chance for positive momentum as the game wound down.

The final thought, a good effort without intensity is a losing cause for this team. Hopefully they can recapture some of what we’ve seen more of late down the stretch.
