In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the Max Domi for Josh Anderson swap between Montreal and Columbus.

Todd Cordell

I really like this deal for Columbus.

Let me preface this by saying I am a Josh Anderson fan. He can score goals and plays a physical brand of hockey you don’t see very often from players who can actually play up in the lineup. With that said, he has only had one *very* good season and players of his physical style don’t tend to age well. We’ve seen it time and time again with power forwards like Corey Perry, David Backes, Milan Lucic, Kyle Okposo, and so forth. Anderson is a good player right now but the extension he signed is pushing it in terms of current value and it is only going to get worse in time.

Max Domi is a very poor defensive player, however, he is an excellent playmaker and will give Columbus a much-needed offensive jolt. I think they play a style of hockey that can help mask some of his issues away from the puck. I also like that the Jackets didn’t have to sign him to a ridiculous contract, and that they scooped up an extra asset (3rd round pick) while landing, in my opinion, the better player.

I can see why Montreal was enticed by Anderson. I just think the cost of acquisition, coupled with a very risky long-term deal, turns the trade into one they shouldn't have made.

Based on where Anderson's contract landed in Montreal, I think Columbus takes the win here. Domi is probably slightly the better player to begin with, but that seven-year gamble on Anderson returning to form really tilts the ice in the Blue Jackets' favour. Unlike the Canadiens, the Blue Jackets were then able to sign Domi to a tidy, short-term deal that carries low risk.

That Columbus was able to win the player-for-player swap *and* grab an additional draft selection in the process really makes this a nice piece of business for Jarmo Kekalainen.
