Savvy Shopping By The Devils On UFA Day
The Devils were active early on Tuesday, inking Jake Allen to a 5 year $1.8m deal, former Oiler Connor Brown to a 4 year deal at a $3m AAV and Evgenii Dadonov to a 1x$1m contract. These are three very good moves by Tom Fitzgerald on a somewhat slow kickoff to free agency for most of the NHL. Let’s break it down…
Jake Allen
As many of you know, I am not a huge fan of Allen. However GMTF seems to have inked Allen to a deal comparable to that which Brad Marchand signed in Florida. A lower AAV and more term(which either player is likely to fulfill) make Allen a very good B goalie for NJ. Allen, who was the best free agent goaltender on the UFA market was rumored to garner $3m+ by many. At just $1.8m, no matter how Allen plays this contract will in no way hurt the team.
Connor Brown
At just $3m for four years, this is solid middle six add by New Jersey. With Boston signing Tanner Jeannot (13pts last year) to a 5x3.4m deal, the 31 year old Brown at $3m is a bargain. His speed and skill, coupled with his tenacity and playoff pedigree make the Devils a much deeper team. Possessing a strong two way game and ability to kill penalties, the Devils will find major value in this contract.
Evgenii Dadonov
Another sneaky good deal by Fitzgerald here. The 36 year old Dadonov had a nice 40 point season in Dallas last year with 20 goals and 20 assists. Adding him with low risk in both term and salary, bolsters the bottom six while still allowing roster flexibility goin forward.
What’s next for NJ? Who would you like to see? Let’s hear it in the comments…
