Devils Report Cards Defense: The Bad and The Ugly
The Bad
Dougie Hamilton: C
Hamilton continues to put up points on the Devils back end with 40 points in 62 games this season. The torn pectoral muscle that sidelined him for most of 23’-24’ still seems to be an issue. Dougie seems hesitant to unleash the big slapper from the point since returning from the injury. In addition also a bit clumsy with handling handcuffed and or pucks tight to the body when on the blue line. Never great defensively, Hamilton did have a decent year in his own end for NJ. Despite that, chatter from within the organization of the big defenseman being moved this off season continue to grow louder.
The Ugly
Dennis Cholowski: F
This grade isn’t necessarily all on Cholowski, but more on the unfortunate circumstance in which he was thrust into big minutes. The journeyman defender found himself seeing power play and even 3v3 overtime minutes and was ineffective in all. Defensively, he was no better, offering very little net front presence. Entering the summer as a UFA, expect the Devils to look elsewhere for their tenth D-man
