Rumor update. There are some minor trades happening right now, but I’m focusing more on the major ones as I call around… the one that I’m really interested in right now. Is that the Mammoths appeared to strongly be considering trading the fourth overall picked to the New York Rangers for a player that can help them right now…

Hearing it could be Alexis Lefreniere…

You know how there’s always rumors surrounding the team that’s hosting the draft that they wan to make a big splash at the draft so that their fans in the arena will hear it from them personally, and a huge ovation will go up, along with the excitement of the whole fan base?

I know a few old curmudgeon writers who always shrug it off and say “that’s not gonna happen”but I’ve seen it happen and I believe there is a showmanship aspect the host teams can’t help but feel, making them want to give their fans attending the draft, something exciting, something that brings them to their feet, and something that says the rest of the NHL, “We are cooler than you.”

I’ve been to quite a few drafts and I’ve seen and heard these rumblings firsthand….

This year is different. This year each team is saving a lot of money and keeping their management group and core scouts at home in the privacy of their own private meeting room either at their home arena or in some hotel. Most of the teams love us because not only is it cheaper, but it is easier to talk freely than it is when you’re literally al squeezed into one round table and all on stage at the draft.

Gary Bettman hates this idea. He loves all the teams getting together and the juice that can bring to one of the cities. I get what he’s saying completely., and I’m a bit curious if this you’re a one time only thing. And the draft returns to Vegas every year in the sphere, because they really did love that.

But that’s not this year. This year everybody is by themselves….

So what do you think will happen this year, when the opening of the draft is essentially being hosted in ALL 32 cities with what is essentially a party/ pep rally being given by all 32 teams for their fanS this Friday night?

One source was very clear this morning with his opinions. He said he thinks this will work out really well, but what he does think is that teams are definitely holding back on announcing some big trades, so they can grab the microphone in their local sports bar and proclaim to a screaming group of fans, “We have a trade to announce!”

So what are these trades that are being held back? Obviously no one’s saying much about it because if it gets out, it ruins the surprise, but fortunately my source is talking to a lot of these GM’s and gave me some people. I have to follow up on now. After I make my calls, I will be reposting here with my rumors and my chart.

I’ll also be doing a podcast today at 1 PM with Luke Ravitz..our college/prospect guy .
