Hello All,

Apologies for the delay in getting a post out after such a freaking epic win. Personally speaking, the delay is because I was in the process of planning and executing a proposal for my long-time girlfriend. Spoiler alert…she said yes. I gave her a puppy. How do you do say no to that? The final two names we are deciding for the puppy are either Ovi or Archer. I am pushing hard for Ovi but I will let her choose.

Today’s post will be as surface level as they get. I did not have time to do my typical deep stat analysis of the game. However, I wanted to get at least something out there cause it was such a monumental evening. Can we talk about what how historic of a win this was? I had the John Walton Radio/NHL XM broadcast streaming in my car and was able to catch the entire game and I about crashed my car during the second period because I was so freaking pumped. Considering how undermanned the Capitals were AND the fashion in which they were able to win this game, this certainly has to be the best Caps win in recent years. The 5-1 comeback against Vancouver last year was pretty wild but this one against the Islanders takes the cake.

The Capitals are now 5-0-3 through their first eight games of the season. This marks the first time in franchise history the Capitals have recorded at least a point in their opening eight games. Incredible.

Watching the bench celebrate Zdeno Chara’s first goal with the Capitals was pretty special. It really gives you a feel for the overall team chemistry and culture that Peter Laviolette has already created in the early stages of the 2020-2021 season

In regard to New York…

I am not quite sure what is going on with the Islanders. They kicked off the season with a dominating 4-0 win against the NYR. Their top three goal scorers from 2019-2020 Barzal, Lee, and Nelson all scored in the first period. That is a near perfect start to the season. The next game they got shutout by the same Rangers team for Ilya Sorokin’s NHL debut in what appeared to be a pretty uninspiring effort by the Islanders. They took eight penalties that game. Were the refs making up for game before where the Rangers took eight penalties? Also, has that ever happened in NHL history where two teams play a back to back and each team has a game where they take eight minors? I doubt it. Next up is game three of the season and the Islanders beat the Boston Bruins 1-0 for an impressive but low scoring win. After that win the Islanders were 2-1-0. However, after that three goal first period in season opener, the Islanders had only scored two goals in eight periods of hockey. Game four of the season the Islanders did as expected and beat the Devils handedly 4-1. The Islanders are now 3-1-0 and let’s be honest, that’s a great start. The next game against the Devils, Barry Trotz gave Ilya Sorokin the nod again. Surely, he can get a win against the Devils…wrong. Once again, the Islanders offense provided zero goal support for Sorokin and the team lost to the Devils 2-0. After two tough losses to the Capitals, the Islanders now sit 3-4 on a three game losing streak. The Islanders need to find consistent offense if they want to keep up this season. They have one of the best coaches and some of the best goaltending in the league. If they can find the back of the net consistently, they will be just fine, however that is just not the case right now. They sit 30th in the league with 2.00 goals for per game. Next up for them is Philly. Sheesh. I am confident Barry Trotz will get his guys goin and they will be a force when we get into the thick of the season.

Next up, the Capitals host the 5-1-1 Boston Bruins in what will be Zdeno Chara’s first game against his former club. Both clubs are sizzling hot right now. Washington has historically played very very well against Boston in recent years. We will see if they can keep that going tomorrow night.

Thanks for reading and GO CAPS
