Quick Hits: October 8, 2018

1) Per Flyers general manager Ron Hextall, James van Riemsdyk will miss 5-6 weeks with the lower-body injury sustained in Saturday's game in Colorado. Jordan Weal skated in JVR's left wing spot on Mikhail Vorobyev's line at Tuesday's practice. Oskar Lindblom appears to be the player tabbed to play JVR's netfront role on the second power play unit.

2) The Flyers held an 11 a.m. practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees in advance of Tuesday's home opener against the San Jose Sharks. For a look at the very early (i.e., extremely small sample size) trends from the season opening road trip to Vegas and Colorado, click here.

The forward lines at Monday's practice:

28 Claude Giroux - 14 Sean Couturier -93 Jakub Voracek
23 Oskar Lindblom -19 Nolan Patrick -11 Travis Konecny
40 Jordan Weal - 24 Mikhail Vorobyev - 17 Wayne Simmonds
21 Scott Laughton -15 Jori Lehterä -12 Michael Raffl

Dale Weise was the 13th forward, took some reps on the "yellow" (Lehterä's) line.

Defense pairs rotated around through different drills but if they revert to opening night's arrangement, would look like this in Tuesday's morning skate and game:

9 Ivan Provorov - 53 Shayne Gostisbehere
8 Robert Hägg - 47 Andrew MacDonald
6 Travis Sanheim - 3 Radko Gudas

Extra defenseman: 26 Christian Folin.

Michal Neuvirth (lower-body injury) joined Brian Elliott and Calvin Pickard for practice on Monday. With JVR going on IR, the Flyers may opt for the time being to carry three goalies on the NHL roster when Neuvirth is activated from IR.

3) Congratulations to Flyers 2015 fifth-round pick Noah Cates for scoring his first collegiate hockey goal in an otherwise rough 7-4 loss for Minnesota Duluth at the hands of Minnesota.

4) Flyers 2017 first-round pick Morgan Frost scored a power play goal on Sunday but the rebuilding Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds slogged through an ugly 6-2 loss to the Ottawa 67's to complete a five-game road trip. The most dominant team in the CHL last year during the regular season, the Greyhounds have nowhere near the depth or front-line talent (beyond Frost) that they did last year. He has "only" nine points (four goals, five assists) in seven games but easily could have 13-15 points if prime chances he's set up for teammates had been finished -- in two cases, into half-empty nets. Frost has at least one point in six of the team's seven games to date.

5) Flyers radio broadcast analyst Steve Coates will be inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 12.
