Today in Flyers History: July 3, 2022

1) Reliable details remain scarce on what is going on with Flyers goaltending prospect Ivan Fedotov. What is known with some degree of reliability at this point:

* Fedotov, who signed a one-year contract with the Flyers on May 7, planned to travel to Philadelphia in July.

* The 25-year-old Fedotov was arrested at a rink in St. Petersburg on July 1 under accusation of dodging registration for military conscription with the Russian Defense Ministry. He could face two years in a Russian prison under Article 328 of the Russian Federation Criminal Code, although an attorney representing the player has told the media that his client had, in fact, registered years earlier in the city of Vsevolozhsk. The lawyer appealed to halt proceedings against Fedotov.

* While being detained by the military authorities, Fedotov took ill. There is video and photographic footage of the player being placed in ambulance and a photo of him inside the ambulance.

* Fedotov was taken to the Navy Hospital in St. Petersburg and was there overnight, reportedly guarded by military police. The player's lawyer, Alexei Ponomarev, was quoted in two national media outlets as saying that he and the player's family have been denied access to visiting or speaking with him.

* Fedotov was discharged from the hospital on July 2. His current whereabouts are unknown. There are disputed reports as to whether he was sent to Severomorsk in the Murmansk region; a closed town that is the main administrative naval base of the Russian Northern Fleet. Initial reports that he'd been taken to Severomorsk were subsequently denied. Ponomorev told the press that he was hoping to obtain clearer information by Monday.

* Russian Ice Hockey Federation president and Hockey Hall of Famer Vladislav Tretiak declined to comment on Fedotov's situation when contacted by RBC Sport. He also refused to speculate on how many other Russian players could be similarly affected.

3)Today in Flyers History: On July 3, 1981, the Flyers and Hartford Whalers completed a multi-player trade. The first Flyers stint of Rick MacLeish's career (he later had a brief return) came to an end and the Flyers also dealt defenseman Blake Wesley, forward Don Gillen, a 1982 1st-round pick (Paul Lawless), a 1982 2nd-round selection (Mark Paterson) and a 1982 third-round pick (Kevin Dineen). In return, the Flyers received highly touted young defenseman Fred Arthur (who retired a year later to pursue medical school and eventually became a doctor), winger Ray Allison (Brian Propp's close friend and former Brandon Wheat Kings linemate), a 1982 first-round pick (Ron Sutter) and a 1982 third-round pick (used on veteran Czechoslovakian nation team star Miroslav "Cookie" Dvorak).
