The New York Islanders have finally made it official with top goaltending prospect, Ilya Sorokin.

Yesterday, it was announced that Sorokin signed his one-year entry-level contract, which will last for the remainder of the season.

Sorokin won’t be allowed to play any games with New York in this year’s playoffs, however.

The larger piece of news came this morning, as the Islanders announced that they’ve signed Sorokin to a one-year extension for the 2020-21 season, which CapFriendly confirmed, carries an AAV of $2 million.

This is a great extension for the Islanders. I had previously thought the AAV could be coming in between $4 and $5 million on a multi-year deal, but even on a one-year deal, I would have expected it to be quite a bit higher than $2 million. It’ll give the Islanders a year to make sure that Sorokin is able to adjust to the NHL, which I’m sure he will, before committing to him on a long-term basis. It also means that Thomas Greiss will almost certainly be heading to free agency this year, but that’s not overly shocking.

This is a big win for the Islanders and if all goes to plan, they’ve just signed a future NHL star.
