*Apologies for no game recaps/previews in the last two days. I’ve been travelling and didn’t have time to get them out.*

The New York Islanders may have dropped their game in overtime last night but in the process, extended their point streak to 17 games. Here’s the game recap.

The Islanders had great chances to open the scoring in what ended up being a scoreless first period. Anthony Beauvillier and Mathew Barzal both hit the post within about 30 seconds of each other about seven minutes in.Barzal was flying in the first period and had at least three good chances to get New York on the board, including that one.

The Islanders were outshot 13-7 but truthfully I think they also got the better chances. Brock Nelson had a few good chances and I continue to be impressed by him. He’s making plays and getting good shots but more importantly, he’s finding way more open ice for himself.

Marcus Sorensen opened the scoring in the second after a perfect feed from Mario Ferraro, which Ryan Pulock wasn’t able to knock down. Adam Pelech tried to get back to cover Sorensen but wasn’t able to in time.

They were still announcing Sorenson’s goal, when Pelech took a shot from the point which Casey Cizikas was able to deflect in. Whether or not he tried to deflect it is up in the air but regardless, tie game.

The teams traded chances in the third period but ultimately, the game went to overtime. There, I can’t help but hold Jordan Eberle at least partially responsible for the goal. He lost a crucial defensive zone puck battle to Evander Kane and then gave him the inside lane, allowing Kane to get the puck to Logan Couture for the game-winning goal. I know Eberle is soft on the puck but if you’re going to lose a puck battle, at least set yourself up in a decent position to recover.

Overall, this was a pretty good game for the Islanders, they just struggled to bury their chances. Varlamov looked very sound positionally all game long. Neither goal was his fault, both being cross-crease passes.

The Islanders will be back in action tomorrow night against the Anaheim Ducks.
