The New Jersey Devils have placed forward J.S. Dea on waivers.
Dea, of course, was acquired from Pittsburgh via waivers just prior to the beginning of the season. He got off to a scorching hot start scoring in three of his first four games while recording nine shots on goal in the process. Dea did this while averaging ~10 minutes per game. Not bad!
Unfortunately, he's been almost invisible since. He didn't score a goal in his last 16 games and went pointless in 15 of them. He averaged only one shot per game during that stretch.
With the offense completely drying up, he didn't provide much – if any – value. Among regular skaters, he has the worst Corsi on the team at 47.04%. Evolving-Hockey.com had Dea worth -.10 goals above replacement at 5v5. He didn't get much time on the penalty kill but the returns were not good when he did.
Though his speed fit in with the team's style of play, he really didn't use it to make much happen. With Jesper Bratt and Brian Boyle healthy, Pavel Zacha playing better, and Brett Seney starting to get more comfortable at the NHL level, it simply wasn't necessary to keep Dea around. I think Ray Shero made the right decision.
