Wrap: Islanders Throttle Flyers, 6-2
An already fragile Flyers time took another backward step on Saturday afternoon in an
ugly 6-2 blowout loss to the New York Islanders at the Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers dropped to 4-7-0 through 11 games, and have not led at any point in the last three games.
Plain and simple, the Islanders played the game the right way, on both sides of the puck, for 60 minutes. The Flyers did not, and the final score reflected it. As soon as their first miscue -- there were many to come -- ended up in the net, the Flyers did not respond well. There were chances to reel the game back in and make a push but nothing was sustained and the hole grew deeper and deeper as the more structured Islanders repeatedly made the Flyers pay for playing an increasingly desperate -- as in despairing, not as in urgent and focused -- and insufficiently competitive game.
"The first thing, we have to a much better job handling a poor play, goal against, bounce against. Tonight, that's where it starts in this hockey game. We had a few pretty good shifts, we had some opportunities, as soon as we gave up the first goal then we start to chase a bit. Honestly, tonight we tightened up in this building and that's not a very good formula to push back in to a hockey game. It leads to things like cheating on pucks. You know looking for plays that you hope are there. It leads to that," Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said.
Brock Nelson scored twice for the Islanders, while Leo Komarov, Anthony Beauvillier, Adam Pelec and Anders Lee (power play) tallied one apiece. Making his first start of the season for the Flyers, Michal Neuvirth stopped 16 shots off 22 shots. Robin Lehner made 22 saves on 23 shots. The Flyers went 0-for-3 on the power play, and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
After an off-day on Sunday, the Flyers depart for a four-game western road trip.
