Final Score: Flyers 6 – Blue Jackets 0

Game Summary

It’s was not sunny in Philadelphia tonight as the Flyers rained goals on the Jackets. Radko Gudas of all players potted two and Steve Mason pitched the shutout against his former team.

At this point in the season losses aren’t all bad. The team is not making the playoffs, and even if they pulled off the miraculous comeback ala the Ottawa Senators last year, they would face the Washington Capitals and very likely get swept. Long term the best thing for the team is to pile up the losses and hope to get franchise altering player in the draft.

With that being said this is not the game anyone wants to see. This was an embarrassment for the team. The Jackets struggled in every area of the game. They were outshot 36-19, and out chanced 27 to 18 in all situations. Their five on five play wasn’t much better. The Jackets controlled just 39% of the shot attempts and 38% of the scoring chances.

Curtis McElhinney received the start with this game being the second half of a back to back. He obviously struggled whenever you let in a goal from the neutral zone you know it’s not going to be a good night. You can’t put all the blame on Mac though the whole team struggled.

Cam Atkinson had a strong game. He played 17:17, firing six shots on goal. Scott Hartnell also played well. Hartnell had four of the Jackets 12 chances and three of their seven high danger chances at even strength. It’s unfortunate he couldn’t get a goal tonight. His next goal will be his 300th, would have been fitting to have scored it against the Flyers.

Brandon Saad missed the game with that injury he suffered yesterday. We still have no word on the severity of it. If it ends up keeping him out of the lineup for an extended period I would imagine that Kerby Rychel would be recalled.
