The Devils, in typical Uncle Lou fashion, have announced that they have re-signed Dman Marek Zidlicky.

Terms of contract not disclosed. No surprise there. Zid was set to become a UFA on July 1st so, to me, this is a good sign. it is "reported" as 1 year, $4M as per NHL.com

In the past I have been an advocate for Zid, but many fans and readers have been quite critical of him and his play. I think last year showed what he is capable of, especially in the absence of Kovalchuk on the point.

With Merril, Gelinas and hopefully Larsson playing bigger roles on the team I believe Zid brings that veteran leadership to the club's youngsters. Greene and Salvador and Volchenkov (assuming they are both here next season) also add to that veteran presence.

Zid was up there in ice time (behind Greene), a power play common, and top point getter on D (20th in the league amongst Dmen).
One area I have been critical is his ability to stay out of the penalty box. On a team that features a few guys who can handle the PIM side of balance sheet, Zid led the team in penalty minutes! He needs to stay OUT of the box!
I think he can also use his shot a bit more effectively from the point.

I did like his puck handling skills and calmness to lead the rush.

So... aside from "brain fart moments" I do believe that Zid brings an offensive aspect to our D. We saw Greene come on the O a bit last year, maybe Gelinas or Larsson could add to that.

But, depending on the deal, I like bringing back Zid.

Devils fans, What do you think of bringing him back for another year?

Truly yours,
The Devils Advocate
