So the answer to my questions yesterday; What Would Lou Do? was answered.
The Devils made a splash and got Martin Skuola!

Well, the Devils deadline deal came early when they acquired Ilya Kovalchuk. I can live with that.

According to Tom Gulitti of the Fire and Ice Blog (great blog if you have not read) he had spoken to Uncle Lou after the deadline. Lamoriello said
"What he does is he gives us a big body (6-3, 225) that can play in different situations,” ... “More importantly, he is used to our style because he played for Jacques (Lemaire) in Minnesota. Whether he plays the five, six or seven (defenseman), he give us depth and when Paul Martin comes back we’ll have eight defensemen.”

Again, I can live with that as Coach Lemaire had much to do with the acquisition and knows how, and where, he can use Skuola. Remember, for the past couple of trading deadlines Skuola's name has always come up as a target for the Devils.

Personally, I think this was a solid deal even though I caught some heat from Devils fans wanting more. I would have liked to have added an extra, perhaps bonafide, defenseman such as a true top 5 guy that could bang bodies. But I am happy with the team we have as we get healthy guys back into the lineup.

The big question for me is how Paul Martin returns and can he get into the groove come playoff time.

Teams around the Devils also made a big push to improve and I personally think the Capitals solidified their team big time. We all know what the Penguins bring to the ice.

What are your thoughts?
