Quick Hits: Konecny on Flyers Daily, IIHF Worlds Medal Round

Quick Hits: May 22, 2024

1) On the latest edition of the Flyers Daily podcast, Jason Myrtetus speaks with Flyers All-Star winger and back-to-back leading scorer from the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, Travis Konecny. TK discusses his 2023-24 season, learning from just missing out on the playoffs, areas of focus this summer, downtime with the family and tons more. Jason also projects what a Konecny extension would look like capwise and length of term. Myrtetus dissects Konecny's production curve over his eight years as an NHL player. '



2) 2024 IIHF World Championships: Medal round matchups for the quarterfinals are now set at the Worlds in the Czech Republic. On Thursday, Team USA (Joel Farabee) will take on the host Czechs. Team Sweden (Samuel Ersson) will go up against Finland. Wednesday is an off-day in the tourney.

3) Today in Flyers' history: May 22

1975: The Buffalo Sabres draw even in the Stanley Cup Final with a 4-2 over the Flyers at the Aud in Game 4.

1980: The Flyers narrow the gap in the Stanley Cup Final to three games to two as they beat the New York Islanders at the Spectrum, 6-3, in Game 5. Bobby Clarke (8th goal of the playoffs), Rick MacLeish (8th and 9th), Mike Busniuk (2nd), Brian Propp (PPG, 4th) and Paul Holmgren (10th) tally for the Flyers as they overcome two power play goals by the Islanders. Pete Peeters stops 35 of 38 shots to earn the win in goal.

1987: The Flyers capture a 5-3 win at the Spectrum over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final for their first win of the series. Setting a resilient tone that would ultimately carry them to Game 7, the Flyers overcome a 3-0 deficit to roar back for five unanswered goals. Murray Craven (2nd), Peter Zezel (PPG, 3rd), Scott Mellanby (5th), Brad McCrimmon (2nd) and Brian Propp (ENG, 11th) score for the Flyers. Philly trails 3-2 entering the third period before erupting for the final three goals. Ron Hextall earns the win with 25 saves on 28 shots.



2010: Michael Leighton stops 17 shots for his third shutout of the Eastern Conference Finals as the Flyers skate to 3-0 road win over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 and take a three games to one lead in the series. After a scoreless first period, the Flyers get two goals from Claude Giroux (7th and 8th) and one from Ville Leino (4th). The latter Giroux tally is a empty-netter with 1:13 left in regulation.

4) Flyers Alumni birthday: Happy birthday wishes go out to mid-1990s Flyers defenseman Janne Niinimaa (1975).
