The Philadelphia Flyers did no harm to their uphill battle to earn an Eastern Conference playoff spot as they skated to a hard-working and tight-checking 4-1 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday evening.

Philly never trailed at any point, going to the first intermission tied at 1-1, taking a 3-1 lead to the third period and then staging an outstanding closeout in which they added another goal to their lead and limited the Rangers to two shots on goal.

Up and down the lineup, Flyers players made important contributions. Those who didn't get on the scoresheet still played strong defensive games. Samuel Ersson played his best game in several weeks, stopping 24 of 25 shots. The team in front of him blocked 19 New York shot attempts.

Cam York (10th goal of the season), Travis Konecny (32nd, a new career high), Bobby Brink (11th), and Noah Cates (6th, five-game point streak) scored a goal apiece for the Flyers. Konecny (1g, 1a) and Ryan Poehling (2a) had two-point nights.

The Flyers went 0-for-4 on the power play, but at least the power plays weren't momentum killers. The Rangers went 1-for-4, with a 5-on-3 goal by Artemi Panarin (47th goal of the season) in the first period representing New York's only tally of the game. Adam Fox and Mika Zibanejad earned the assists.

Rangers coach Peter Laviolette elected to start Jonathan Quick in goal for this game. Quick stopped 21 of 25 shots in a losing cause.
