NHL teams had until 5.00 PM yesterday to issue qualifying offers to their restricted free agents. The Canadiens did so for all but two of their RFAs; Joel Teasdale and Denis Gurianov. Which means that offers were made to Rafael Harvey-Pinard, Alex Newhook, Jesse Ylonen, Lucas Condotta, Mitchell Stephens and Nicolas Beaudin.
While Teasdale and Gurianov did not receive qualifying offers, they could still resign with the Canadiens like Rem Pitlick did last season, but I’d be surprised if they did. It’s a shame for Teasdale who has had the worst luck with injuries, but Gurianov has failed to impress me since coming over in the Dadonov trade and I’d rather the roster spot be used by another young player.
Earlier in the day, the Habs also released their development camp roster which includes 37 players. The event will take place from July 1 to July 4 in Brossard, but the first on-ice sessions will take place on Sunday morning. All practices and scrimmages will be open to the public.
The roster includes 27 players drafted by the organization, two players acquired via trade and one via free agency. Seven players invited on a try-out basis complete the group.
The forward group is made up of Owen Beck, Blake Biondi, Jared Davidson, Isaac Dufort, Filip Eriksson, Cédrick Guindon, Riley Kidney, Riley McKay, Filip Mesar, Rhett Pitlick, Vinzenz Rohrer, Joshua Roy, Gabriel Seger, Xavier Simoneau, Ty Smilanic, Jack Smith, Luke Tuch, William Vote and Florian Xhekaj. You might have noticed that Finnish center Oliver Kapanen isn’t on the list, it’s not that he wasn’t invited but because he’s currently doing his conscript service at the Sports School of the Defense Forces according to a Twitter post from his team in Liiga. William Vote is an American player which Kent Hughes has coached in the past but who’s only 5’7’’ which explains why he has been ignored during the draft.
The blueliners are: Jeremie Bucheler, Francesco Dell’Elce, Adam Engstrom, Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux, Luke Mittelstadt, Petteri Nurmi, John Parker-Jones, David Reinbacher, Jayden Strubble, Miguel Tourigny, Charle Truchon and William Trudeau. It will be Reinbacher’s first taste of the Canadiens’ organization and after the reception he got on social media, let’s hope the fans in attendance show him what the Sainte-Flanelle’s fanbase is really like. Logan Mailloux will be taking part in his second camp with the team, but he didn’t skate last year because of injuries.
Finally, 6 netminders have also been invited: Emmet Croteau, Jakub Dobes, Jacob Fowler, Quentin Miller and Samuel Urban.
Today is also the opening of free agency in the NHL and as I’ve said yesterday, I don’t see much happening for the Canadiens, although they may get some depth signings for the Laval Rocket and their ECHL affiliate the Trois-Rivières Lions. On top of Teasdale and Gurianov who became unrestricted free agents as they didn’t receive a qualifying offer, these former Habs will also be free as a bird at noon today: Jonathan Drouin, Paul Byron, Alex Belzile, Chris Tierney, Corey Schueneman, Madison Bowey and Anthony Richard. I’ll be keeping an eye on Jonathan Drouin as I’m curious to see if he’ll find another NHL home and as for Paul Byron, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get some kind of coaching job with the Habs since he expressed interest in that at the end of last season and his playing days seem to be over.
