The Toronto Maple Leafs have only three picks for the NHL Draft in Nashville later this month, but you could not tell that by the number of players the club spoke to at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo, NY this week.
Most of the prospects projected to go in the first round were interviewed by the Leafs, who may be taking a scattergun approach since they are picking 28th with the pick acquired from Washington in the Rasmus Sandin deal.
Undoubtedly, Toronto will take the best player available picking so late in round 1, but they may be looking to add a blueliner after dealing Sandin and not selecting a defenseman in the last two drafts.
In spite of this not being a deep draft for the back end, there are a number of defenders including Etienne Morin (Moncton-QMJHL), Maxim Strbak (Sioux Falls-USHL), Cameron Allen (Guelph - OHL), Lukas Dragicevic (Tri City-WHL), and Luca Cagnoni (Portland - WHL) that are projected to be on the board at the end of the first round.
The Leafs may be in a position to add draft picks if they cannot re-sign Ryan O’Reilly or Michael Bunting and decide to trade their rights.
